10/9 Update

What an amazing day! 6 weeks ago (at 12:30a) I wasn't sure he'd ever come home again. Today he did! We are thrilled with this milestone! We were escorted into Town by our favorite Paradise Police Department - lights and sirens guiding him home! 🖤💙🖤 A special thank you to all those who were waiting for him at home and to Dominic Vannucci for bring us full circle!! We certainly have our work cut out for us and I've already been labeled the "Professional Torturer", there will be no slacking on my watch 😀. Kira (his dog) was initially a little nervous with all the additional people and noise, but she's sure glad to have her person home. A home cooked meal (it will certainly be a while before I complain about cooking...I am over take out), college football games, a comfy couch, his kids harassing him, and his own bed...life does not get much better than this! God is SO good!!!

10/6 Update (Yesterday)
We are closer and closer to John coming home. He continues to make great progress. Today he had a tele-appointment and they took a look at his right knee. I had no idea how extensive the incisions (2) were. John said he has enough hardware in that knee to remodel his house...he's not entirely wrong. He is still non weight bearing on the right leg, probably for another 6 - 12 weeks. He can remove the brace for showers and if he's in bed, so that will make things so much easier. He worked hard in PT/OT today, walking a total of 600 feet, 256 feet in one go. PT is working on his discharge exercises and discharge orders, he is scheduled to come home on Friday!!! We continue to be so grateful for the prayers and support. We acknowledge that God has been very active in this recovery and that is absolutely in large thanks to all of you. Considering how this started, we continue to believe that his progress to date is miraculous. We have months of hard work ahead of us, but we are counting our blessings everyday and keeping a positive attitude, because the alternative wouldn't do either of us any good. Thank you all. You are so appreciated! God is SO good!!

10/2 Update
John continues to impress me. When I consider the situation we were in 5 weeks ago, I am so grateful for where we are now. Today I went down to spend the day with John and learn how to best assist John as he will be navigating around the house and if we need to run errands - I feel like I'm really just there for moral support because this guy is rockin' it! This man is doing 95% of his lifts, transfers, walking, and hopping on his own.🙌 The Physical Therapist told me he is often reminding John not to overdo things so that he can do more later, because no surprise, John just wants to do it all. We practiced transferring to the car, which John was nervous about, but then he pulled it off like a rockstar. He made it look easy. His muscle tone is improving, his arms looking less and less like "chicken legs" every day. He is keeping his spirits up, his expectations (more or less) reasonable, and his humor (sarcasm) on point. He's an amazing example of resilience. I promised not to trim his beard and so he let me cut his hair, he looks more like himself! We continue to be so grateful for the help around the farm, with meals, visitors, support and prayers. We have an amazing army at our backs and we will never be able to thank you all enough. God is SO good!!

9/28 Update - Let's go Niners!!! ❤️💛❤️
John is "getting his butt kicked" here at rehab, but he is taking it in stride, doing the work and making progress! Yesterday he spent 45 minutes doing a sit to stand, pivot to sit and repeat exercise! Then he stood for 2 minutes and 8 seconds while also doing an exercise that had him moving things with alternating arms.
Today he WALKED using the parallel bars 3x (60 feet) then used his walker in the hallway and WALKED 21 more feet. Then he was able to shower (which is in itself and exhausting task). He says every muscle is weak and sore, but he did it, he worked hard and he's thrilled with the progress. He is so tired, the good news is he is sleeping well at night, so he's able to do healing in a many ways. His appetite continues to improve, he's been gifted so much food he feels like he's gonna burst. He is also thrilled with all the visitors. He did want me to relay that if you come by and miss him, he's sorry, but you are more than welcome to track him down in the workout room or the dining room.
We continue to be blessed by all your positive comments and well wishes we read them all. You are the very best of friends and neighbors. We appreciate you so much! 💕 God is SO good!!

9/26 Update
I gave John a run down of the Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser as best I could. It's hard to describe something as amazing as that event was and do it justice. John and I are so grateful to this community, and he asked me to say, "Thank you!"

The last few days have been great for John. PT is kicking his butt and wearing him out! He was finally able to take a shower and he said he feels human for the first time in weeks! He's doing leg exercises, working with "baby" weights, spending much more time sitting up or in his wheelchair, transferring him self (still scootching) to various sitting elements, and he's even practicing standing. It's still in short bursts, but he's increasing in duration each time and his ability to get to standing is more and more him, less the therapist helping him upright. John likes to try and out run and out maneuver his nurses by doing laps of the building in his wheelchair. He says some of the staff give him funny looks when he laps them the 3rd or 4th time. He told me he did 10.5 laps today. He is disappointed to report that even when he's out of his room exploring during med time or vital check, the nurses always manage to magically appear! His appetite is improving, but now he eats more like me and less like a teenage boy who's just spent 4 hours at football practice! John is finally able to get some good sleep as well, it's much quieter and calmer than UC Davis, and he is grateful for the positivity of the environment. He is in great spirits, harassing the nurses with his very "John" sense of humor, enjoying the visitors he's been blessed to see, and talking more than I've ever seen him talk before! God is SO good!

Okay community I need advice. I need a new bed. I just purchased a Sleep Number bed, but it's awful, truly top 3 of worse mattress I've ever slept on. I hate memory foam and the top layer is memory foam with zero support. Even at the highest setting the mattress is not firm. We need a mattress and frame that can allow for the back and feet to adjust. The mattress must also be firm. Please let me know what your recommendations are. Please and thank you!!

9/23 Update

Rehab was a success today! John was able to transfer from bed to a wheelchair and then to a platform on his own without the use of a slide board. He made some progress that really was a boost to his spirits. We are thrilled to have him closer to home. I am going be be juggling home, work, (a bit of the farm), and of course being with John, so I will be cutting back on the updates a little bit, maybe every two or three days.

I cannot reiterate enough how grateful we are to this community and some beyond, for supporting us, helping us, praying for us, and cheering us on. John has a long road of recovery ahead. God willing he'll be back to full duty in 12-18 months, but that will require a lot of hard work, determination, and focus on the end goal. The kind words will continue to lift our spirits on those hard and difficult days. We have been so humbled and blessed by the outpouring of love. You are ALL AMAZING! We appreciate you! God is SO good!!! 🖤💙🖤

9/22 Update
John stood again today and took a few hop steps to the chair. Then we waited, and waited, and waited some more...but we're now in Chico! Looking forward to next steps and working towards getting him home!! God is SO good!!!

9/21 Update
Well, the day didn't end quite how we were hoping and we're still at UC Davis, but that should be different tomorrow 🙏🏻💙💛💙. PT was HARD today, it's really the first time in 3 weeks that John stood all the way up, on his own. He also took about seven hop/steps. His right leg is still non-weight bearing, so this was upper body and arm strength doing the work. His bloop pressure tanked and he almost passed out, but thankfully he communicated well and they were able to get him stretched out and his BP recovered quickly. The Physical Therapist was pretty impressed by his effort. He thinks John should be walking with a walker in about a week🙏🏻. We are incredibly grateful for the many, many Dr's, nurses, and other staff at UC Davis who have helped us get this far. They really have been A-MA-ZING!!! It's been a long few weeks, but we know that he has been lifted up and prayers and we know we are not walking this alone. God is SO good!!!
