Out of dirt, water and air comes ... spinach! This spring's weather of low then high temperatures, and over a month of no rain caused some minor anxiety for us Adirondack small-scale organic growers. Then, miraculously, food is there for the morning omelette. One more batch of transplanting, including gift seedlings from friends, and some direct seeding for later harvesting, and all that's left is the weeding and the eating.

Welcome to my Adirondack vegetable garden page! Here I will post photos and updates as I begin my journey to produce healthy organic food using sustainable methods like no-till garden preparation. Produce will be shared with local families, shops, and schools by networking with other Essex County organic farmers.

Soon it will be time to begin garden preparations using no-till (no digging) methods. Last spring I collected and cleaned cardboard, laid it across the planting area to suppress weeds, weighed it down with rocks and discarded timber poles, covered it with organic matter, and finally added rich mountain soil. I started vegetable and a few flower seeds indoors, nursing them to eventual sprouts with warming mats (I actually used an electric blanket!), grow lights, and moderate watering.
