Sustainable agriculture.
You hear that term all the time, but what does it actually mean?
To us, part of sustainability means making the most of the resources available to us while creating as little waste as possible.
Right now, we have a group of 25 head that are doing exactly that — turning products that may otherwise go to waste into high-quality beef.
Their ration starts with a commodity feed that we purchase 6,000 lbs at a time from one of our local feed stores. From there, we’re able to incorporate several locally sourced byproducts:
🌾 Rice from a local seed company/seed cleaner that doesn’t meet the standards for human consumption or next year’s seed production.
🍺 Spent brewers grains from Brick & Forge / La Torcia Brick Oven — the grain left after brewing the craft beer served at their locations.
🌱 Alfalfa hay that didn’t meet the original owner’s standards for his performance horses, but still has plenty of nutritional value for cattle.
Instead of these products going unused, our cattle put them to work.
That’s one of the things cattle do exceptionally well: take resources that have little or no value for human consumption and turn them into nutritious beef.
Sustainability doesn’t always have to be complicated. Sometimes it looks like a Polaris bed full of buckets, leftover grain, rejected hay, and 25 hungry steers. 😂
Waste less. Use what’s available. Support local businesses. Raise good cattle.
That’s sustainable agriculture to us
