Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day!

Today we celebrate the people who first called this land home! (and not that other guy 🙄)

Did you know that Christopher Columbus was NOT the first person to discover the Americas? Native Indigenous tribes had been inhabiting the land for thousands of years prior!

Indigenous Peoples of the Western Hemisphere immediately experienced enslavement and theft of resources by the explorers turned settlers. Colonies created by the Portuguese, Spanish, French, Dutch, and English grew throughout the Americas and increasingly encroached upon Native lives and lands. Warfare, enslavement, and forced relocation disrupted and altered the lives of Indigenous Peoples in the Americas.

Celebrating Columbus and other explorers like him dismisses the devastating losses experienced by Indigenous Peoples of the Western Hemisphere in the past and the ongoing effects of colonialism, even today.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day is recognized through community gatherings, educational programs, storytelling, art, music, cultural traditions, and opportunities to learn about the histories and contemporary experiences of Indigenous peoples.

This day offers an opportunity to deepen our understanding of Indigenous sovereignty, environmental justice, cultural and language preservation, and other issues affecting Indigenous communities today. By centering Indigenous voices and experiences, we honor the past while recognizing that Indigenous peoples, cultures, and communities are vital parts of our present and future.
