Our horses may not be at the top of the list, but it is still exciting to see both Total Stranger and McCrunch on the list. Lots of talent here that should make for a very exciting Meadowlands Pace!!

East Rutherford, NJ — With the exception of McCrunch rejoining the poll at No. 10, the fifth edition of Dave Little’s Road to The Meadowlands Pace weekly Top 10 saw little movement.

QUEEN OF SUCCESS

Another of our 3YOs that Buck and I really really like and carried over to this year is the Captaintreacherous sired QUEEN OF SUCCESS!!!

She is a partnership filly – and as much as Buck and I have had a ball with this talented lass, we feel equally as lucky, happy and privileged to share the ownership with two very terrific partners, Robert LeBlanc and our trainer Tony Alagna!!

Queen did not come into our lives in the usual way with respect to partnerships, meaning at one of the yearling sales. Instead Buck and I were already back home in Virginia from the Lexington sale when Tony said that he had a really nice filly with a share still available – and asked whether we would be interested. Still under our spending budget, we happily said yes -- and have been delighted ever since that we did!!

At the time Buck and I loved the idea of partnering with Tony, and it was our first association with Robert LeBlanc who is definitely one of the nicest men in our sport!! In all ways, we felt happy then and feel happy now that we answered, “Yes!!”

In nine starts last year Queen captured a speedy 2YO mark of 1:50.3M and earnings slightly under $100,000, precisely $97,397. She, by the way, is out of Western Ideal mare named Cashaway – and according to the sale catalog was both raised and consigned by Brittany Farms.

Once Queen was prepped and ready to begin her two-year-old campaign, she stepped onto the track in very celebratory fashion, winning her one and only qualifier by three lengths in 1:54.1 at The Red Mile, last quarter in 27.1. Tony actually sat behind her that day, taking on the driving duties himself.

And with that nice qualifier under her belt, the racing then got underway in earnest. One by one Queen notched off four straight wins in Kentucky Commonwealth Series races – each of them by a margin of two or more lengths. By then it was driver Andy McCarthy sitting behind her, at the controls.

That was such a lovely ride, watching those wins. But then Lady Luck skipped out and went on vacation when Queen crossed over our northern border for the prestigious She’s A Great Lady elim and final at Canada’s Woodbine Mohawk Park. Here she finished 3rd and 4th. Perhaps there was something about the track that did not suit her. Maybe she was just feeling a bit homesick. Whatever …. I really do not know.

But after shipping back to The Red Mile, Queen returned to the Queen we knew –finishing a very impressive second to the great Niki Hill in the International Stallion, last quarter a tick faster than Niki Hill – and this time it was Dexter Dunn guiding her.

Sweet revenge over that loss to Niki Hill and a return to the winner’s circle followed with McCarthy back for the Breeders Crown elim – also giving her that speedy lifetime mark. We were just so happy for her!!!

A Standardbred Canada article provided the details: “Queen Of Success pulled off a 23-1 upset as she handed Niki Hill and Sea Silk their first taste of defeat in the $25,000 Breeders Crown elimination for the two-year-old pacing filly division, which closed out Friday's freshman round at The Meadowlands.”

As Tony explained, “She hit a few bumps in the road, but her last start in Lexington [in the International Stallion Stakes on October 8] when she was second to Niki Hill, she showed she was coming back to what we thought she was early.”

But as things go sometimes, the thrill of the big Breeders Crown elimination did not carry over to the much more lucrative Breeders Crown final. A disappointment for sure – 10th place.

Buck and I had hoped for Queen's great glory in the Breeders Crown final. That would have been the perfect ending to a lovely season. But at the same time, I really do have to say that we did not really lament the loss too much because it had been one heck of a fun racing season!!! She had done herself proud. And now we would close the 2021 chapter of her book and look to starting a new chapter in 2022!!!

The break between racing seasons is behind Queen now -- and she is back with Tony getting ready to get serious on the racetrack again. And hopefully this will be a great year for her too!!! Buck and I sure are hoping for that!!!

Interestingly -- Queen has a 2YO sister, Diamondsnpearls, that is in the barn of another of our top regular trainers, Nancy Takter. This filly is owned by Marvin Katz and Brittany Farms. So not only will we have the fun of rooting for Queen this year, but you can be sure that we’ll be rooting for her little sister too!!!

Sometimes when a horse shows extraordinary talent, the inclination is to “go back to the well” -- to try for another just like the other. And yes, that is exactly what we did!! Last year we were so pleased with Bo***ir Hanover (P,2, 1:49.4M, $221,834) that in the fall we went to the 2021 Lexington Selected Yearling and, with our partners, picked up her sister, Bellisima Hanover.

Talking about 2YO Bellisima is for another time since we are still talking about 3YO – so this post will focus more on Bo***ir. Before doing that, though, I will point out that the fillies are full sisters – daughters of the phenomenally successful sire Captaintreacherous and out of the $1 million winning mare Bedroomconfessions, she the winner of multiple stakes and with a speedy 1:48.4S mark.

The highlight of Bo***ir’s freshman year was unquestionably her spectacular victory in the Bluegrass Stake at Kentucky’s The Red Mile. Buck and I were there!! It was so thrilling – watching her leave the gate from the outside post 6, a confident Dexter Dunn taking her right to the lead. The pair never looked back as Bo***ir powered to a lifetime mark of 1:49.4 , last quarter of 26.2, and amazingly won by a hefty three and a-half lengths over favored Lyons Serenity.

Ray Cotolo more aptly detailed the race in an article at the USTA webside, “Bo***ir Hanover shut the door on 2-5 favorite Lyons Serenity when speeding clear to a 1:49.4 score in the first division of the McWicked.

“Driver Dexter Dunn dashed the daughter of Captaintreacherous-Bedroomconfessions to the point from post six moving to a :28 first quarter. Lyons Serenity sat fourth in the stroll up the backside towards a :55.2 half before getting underway uncovered to the final turn. But Lyons Serenity’s first-over crawl faced no match to Bo***ir Hanover around the final turn as the Tony Alagna trainee widened her advantage to three-quarters in 1:23.2 and expanded her lead through the straightaway sprint to finish 3-1/2 lengths in front at the beam. Galleria Hanover rode the pylons to snag third with A Girl That Twirls rallying from second over to take fourth.”

In all honesty, Buck and I had not even expected Bo***ir to race in the Bluegrass. Just the week before she had posted a 4th place finish in the She’s A Great Lady final -- the week before that was 2nd in the Lady elimination. With top level racing and a lengthy ship from Canada to Kentucky, we expected that she would probably take a week off. But lo and behold, Bo***ir was in great form!! Tony had her fine-tuned and ready to go, to take command over that very talented field of Bluegrass fillies!!

That big Bluegrass win, coupled with another in a Kentucky Championship Series and bridesmaid finishes in the Champlain, Kindergarten Stake and the aforementioned She’s A Great Lady elim have us thinking that Bo***ir’s 2022 season might just be another really good one!!

Just to recount, my original interest in Bo***ir was sparked as I flipped through the pages of “The Black Book,” a catalog listing the pedigrees of yearlings slated for the Standardbred Horse Sale in Timonium, Maryland that year. Massive black print simply jumped off Bo***ir’s page – a sign, of course, that she was royally bred!! Immediately she was added to the fillies of special interest. Then step two in the process was to actually see Bo***ir. And once again she impressed!! She had great conformation, seemingly a nice attitude, looked sleek and racy and had a sharp and attentive eye. Buck and I loved her!

Our trainer Tony Alagna loved her! So did Hanover Shoe Farms’ Dr. Bridgette Jablonsky who in an interview for Harness Racing Update was quoted: “Pacing filly-wise, I think we have a real standout in Hip 65 (Bo***ir Hanover), the first foal out of Bedroomconfessions and it’s a Captain filly and what better filly sire is there out there right now than Captaintreacherous? His fillies just dominate things. She’s a big, beautiful filly. A very, very classy filly. She’s a real standout if you’re looking for a high-end pacing filly.”

All of the boxes were checked. Buck and I thought that Bo***ir Hanover was “the one!” As it turned out, we were not the only ones – so a partnership was formed. We all had so much fun getting together and rooting for her that all of the same partners went “back to the well” for Bellisima!!

Thus far Tony’s training reports on both Bo***ir and Bellisima have been very good – so it seems like maybe, just maybe, this racing year with them will be a whole lot of fun!!! Have you ever had a song that just kind of sticks in your head? I’ve had that same thing except in this case it has been a jingle. I keep thinking about “double the pleasure, double the fun!!” Bo***ir and Bellisima may not be identical twins, but as sisters they do resemble each other – and if both can have a great year, it will definitely be “double the fun!!” Maybe that jingle is some kind of premonition!! Let’s hope!!!

(For anyone too young to remember, many years ago the Wrigley’s brand of chewing gum promoted their doublemint flavor with an advertising campaign featuring a set of identical twins and the very catchy slogan of “Double your pleasure. Double your fun.” I believe that the actual jingle went something like, “Double your pleasure, double your fun, with Doublemint, Doublemint, Doublemint Gum!”)

Pedigree guru Alan Levitt always has an interesting "must read" column in Harness Racing Update -- and his latest column is another terrific one!!!

We, of course, could not have felt more gratified and thrilled that in this column he chose to highlight the stallion potential of CAPTAIN CRUNCH!!!

Levitt opines, "In**ed means that the same horse's name appears twice when the sum of those two generations in which it appears is six or less. Working from a fallible memory, one current horse that comes to mind is CAPTAIN CRUNCH (capitalization mine), who is 3 x 3 to Artsplace. It's not my intention to write ads for anyone's stud, but that close cross to a truly great racehorse and sire can only be a benefit to Crunchy.

"We don't breed pacers, so I'm not promoting any of our stock, but don't be surprised if Crunchy hits as a sire."

We at Caviart Farms totally agree -- and we are supporting him with our own mares. And honestly, since we keep the majority of our babies to race under the Caviart Farms banner, we would not breed to a stallion that we didn't believe in. We could not possibly feel more excited to send our mares to CAPTAIN CRUNCH!!!"

And by the way, in addition to Caviart Farms, Captain Crunch was raced at 2 and 3 by the ownership partnership of 3 Brothers Stable, Rojan Stable and Christina Takter. Crunch was a real phenomenal powerhouse on the racetrack, and we have continued to retain an ownership interest in him.

Just before a winter storm blanketed our Washington, D.C. area with snow, Buck and I were walking through the woods at a nearby park, all the while chatting away about our Caviart Farms horses.

“I think that this is going to be a really good racing year,” I predicted, offering my scientifically lacking basis of “feeling it in my bones.”

Upon hearing my optimism, Buck suggested that since it is the beginning of a new year, it is the perfect time for me to start writing more about horses and racing in general, and our horses and our racing in particular – my feelings, thoughts, observations and expectations.

At the same time, friends have been asking about the horses that we will have racing this year. These friends seem to enjoy watching the horses and kindly also root for them.

So over the next week or so, I will start writing a bit about the 2022 racing stable, together with some of the in foal broodmares. (Lots of inquiries about Caviart Ally – expecting a Captain Crunch foal at about Valentine’s Day. Stemming from such talents as Ally and Crunch, we really have high hopes for this one!!!) )

Anyway, to start: Caviart Farms will have two horses older than 3YO racing this year.

Most everyone will remember NO LOU ZING – “Louie” – now returning to the track as a more mature 5YO. Louie’s first race of this year was on Monday night at Yonkers. Unfortunately, his was an 8th place finish, but Louie had the unlucky draw of the always dreaded post 8, a tough starting position at the track. Both his trainer Nancy Takter and driver Scott Zeron were well pleased with his performance – Takter commenting that he “raced well considering the slow fractions” and said that his finish was “strong.” In fact, a glance at the race chart shows that his 27.3 was the fastest last quarter in the race.

Louie’s next start will be a return to Yonkers on Monday, January 17th, Race 4 – and this time he will leave from the much more favorable Post 4. Zeron is expected to drive, and the post time is listed as 7:55 p.m.

No Lou Zing, a son of Sweet Lou and the Western Terror mare Terroronthebeach, has earnings of $578,927 and a lifetime mark of 1:49.1F. He is owned by Caviart Farms, 3 Brothers Stables and Rojan Stables.

The other Caviart Farms returnee older than three is the now 4YO ANOKA HANOVER, 2020 Dan Patch Trotting Filly of the Year. After enjoying a R&R hiatus at our Caviart Farms in Kentucky, Anoka is now back with her trainer from the very get-go, Noel Daley. She faced some issues last year, but we hope that those are behind her and that 2022 will be a great year!!

Anoka touts a record of T, 3, 1:52.3 F, has lifetime earnings of $791,239 and is a daughter of Donato Hanover and the Yankee Glide mare, Aunt Mel. In addition to Caviart Farms, Anoka is owned by Daley, Crawford Farms Racing and LA Express Stable LLC.

In a recent Harness Racing Update article, when Daley was asked what was his best memory of 2021 – both on and off the track – with respect to on the track he responded, “Probably on the track, it’s funny because she was beaten, but Anoka Hanover running second in the Breeders Crown. She started out the year like I absolutely thought she’d beat the boys and then I had trouble with her all year -- then she turned the corner and come back. That was better than winning the race for me.”

These are the Caviart Farms older race horses, and we will move on to the 2YO and 3YO.

On a walk through the woods at the park yesterday, Buck encouraged me to start a journal -- detailing our horses and the reason for my significant optimism this year.

Thus, at least in a couple of day I will begin chatting about some of our horses and my thoughts about them.

Other than family, there is nothing that owns my heart and soul more than our beautiful horses!!!
