This is Booze Bully.

Not just bottles. Not just tasting notes. Not just another reason to pour a glass.

It’s getting people around a table and giving them a little more understanding of what’s actually in that glass — who made it, how it was made, and why it tastes the way it does.

Because the more you know, the more interesting the glass becomes.

We taste. We question. We occasionally call bu****it.

And hopefully, everybody leaves knowing a little more than when they walked in.

Sometimes, smaller is better.

This was the table before our smallest private tasting yet.

Fewer seats didn’t mean a smaller experience. It meant more time with every pour, more conversation, more questions, and the chance to really explore what was in each glass.

That’s one of the things we love about private tastings: no two are quite the same. Sometimes it’s a room full of people. Sometimes it’s just a handful gathered around a table.

The bottles don’t care.

Neither do we.

Atanasio Fuerte Blanco (92 proof) comes out swinging on the nose—raw agave, citrus, white pepper, marjoram, mint and even a little Thai basil.

The palate plays it more conservatively.

Sweet pepper and cooked agave lead with a pleasantly thick mouthfeel, but some of that aromatic complexity gets left behind. Chamomile tea, clove and honey arrive late, carrying into a mellow, medium finish.

This is a highly approachable fuerte—sweet, peppery and composed, without the intensity or complexity that can make higher-proof blancos an enthusiast-only affair. Agave nerds may want a few more corners and edges, but this casts a much wider net.

Neat, it’s an easy sipper for 92 proof. Put it in the hands of a good mixologist, though, and I think it absolutely sings.

BULLY VERDICT: Plenty of proof without making you prove anything.

Barrel Proof and Full Proof sound like two ways of saying, “We didn’t water it down.”

They’re not.

Barrel Proof: bottled at essentially the proof it leaves the barrel.

Full Proof: proofed down to match the proof the whiskey had when it went into the barrel.

Same barrel. Two very different reference points.

Because whiskey terminology is confusing enough without pretending these mean the same damn thing.

Sometimes spirits education requires books.

Sometimes it requires a sombrero, a plastic cup and questionable amounts of “field research.”

We take our work very seriously.

Ourselves? Considerably less so.

A little Reserva de la Torre from this weekend—and a connection to what we’ve got coming October 24th.

Luis Sanchez, who represents Reserva de la Torre, joins Zoe Romero as one of our agave specialists for Spirits of Mexico at Cassy’s Underground.

Tequila. Mezcal. Sotol. Mexican gin.

Four spirits, a much bigger look at Mexico, and plenty to talk about beyond the margarita glass.

Mexico gave us tequila.

And somehow America responded by putting it in a frozen machine next to the nachos.

We should probably fix that.

October 24 — The Spirits of Mexico at Cassy’s Underground.

We’re pouring Mexican gin, tequila, sotol, and mezcal and getting into what actually makes them different — the plants, the places, the production, and the wonderfully nerdy stuff hiding inside your glass.

Agave experts Luis Sanchez and Zoe Romero join the panel, because at some point even Booze Bully knows when to bring in adult supervision.

Four spirits. One night.
A much bigger Mexico than you’ll find in a margarita glass.

One Minute With Tommy Craggs of Watch Hill Proper.

When you’re surrounded by that much great whiskey, you learn what’s worth paying attention to.

Tommy says A. Smith Bowman deserves ours.

Only problem? Getting your hands on the good stuff can feel like a competitive sport.

Trust Tommy. We would’ve verified it ourselves… if Bowman would kindly let us buy some.

Jack Daniel’s could call itself bourbon.

It doesn’t.

And neither do I. 🥃

The rules say one thing. The Lincoln County Process says something else.

Agree? Or am I getting bullied in the comments for this one?
