Tequila is tequila. Mezcal is mezcal. Different agaves. Different production methods. Different traditions.

And no—mezcal isn’t just “smoky tequila.”

Understanding the difference makes both more interesting.

It does not tell you whether the tequila is well made, balanced, or worth drinking.

Additive-free is a production claim—not a quality guarantee.

Transparency matters. What’s in the bottle matters.

One of her colleagues knew I’d be tagging along — and, knowing my love of wh***ey, showed up with a bottle of King of Kentucky as a gift for me.

We had never met.

Suddenly, I felt extremely invested in the conference.
