Not only are our snap peas looking good aboveground, they're also looking good below the soil- with those pinkish nodules on the roots indicating the presence of rhizobia bacteria busy pulling nitrogen out of the air and fixing it in the soil.

When snowflakes form, they absorb nitrogen from the air; when the snow falls and melts, the nitrogen is released into the soil. That's why the old Yankee nickname for snow is "poor man's fertilizer." Snow can also help protect plants against the cold. It's been calculated that 10 inches of light snow can have an insulation value of R18, similar to a six inch layer of fiberglass insulation.
Due to expected severe weather conditions, the Winter Market will be closed this Saturday, January 29th. Please stay safe everyone!
A big thank you to everyone who braved the snow with us last week at The Onancock Market - but this time it sounds like one to sit out! Snowy and frozen conditions for most of the past week have made it difficult to harvest, too. Stay safe and we will see you February 5th!

The grind ... come get your FRESH ground horseradish, today at the Cape Charles Farmers Market at the Museum from 3 pm until 6, and Saturday at The Onancock Market, 9am until noon!
If it doesn't stop raining here for a while, we're going to need some new equipment ... like the County Sea Horse Super-4, the first, and only, tractor to be driven across the English Channel ...
About a month after it's planted, the horseradish gets its first "cleaning." Each plant is dug partway up, all the crowns except one are pulled off, and side suckers are removed. This encourages the plant to develop into one big root instead of a wild tangle of smaller roots. The Van Dessels have always called this process "cleaning," but in the Midwest it's known as "lifting" or "lifting and suckering". It's all done by hand, and is a rather labor-intensive process ...
