Some new items finally coming together for the Cape Charles Farmers Market at the Museum and .a.r.s.h.fest this week made from our wild fennel patch: Whole Fennel Seed as well as rubs based on ground fennel seed and salt-cured wild fennel pollen. Did a final taste-test of one of the rubs on some grilled chicken today and it is fantastic! Stay tuned for more!

Hopeton Farms' Temperanceville location has an abundance of Perilla frutescens- commonly called Shiso or wild basil. It is a delightful edible herb with a pungent aromatic, warming, sweet taste that has scientifically proven medicinal uses. There are so many ways to use Shiso- I will post links and recipes in the comments.
We will have fresh Shiso at the Tuesday Cape Charles Farmers Market. Feel free to pre order.

Today is Eid al Adha for the Muslim nation and we were able to spend time with clients from northern counties who choose our lambs for their religious celebrations. The only parts not used to feed people are the section of the leg from hoof to knee and the actual food inside the intestines. Always refreshing to find the ways in-which we are lacking or lazy.

In this article he states that the ram (and I want to add: buck, bull and stud) you use this year for breeding will impact your breeding program for the next ten years. TRUE. He also says if your only looking at the price of the ram (or whatever) your adding to your program your focused on the only thing not relevant. TRUE again.
If your planning on breeding anything this fall. Please don't just try to get it pregnant. Do better.

Dinner is just a few days over 8 weeks old finally and all bull calf 😂
We had a good weekend on the farm. Processed some birds, picked the garden, loved on sheep, goats, cows, cats, dogs and especially loved on some chickens. Also made yogurt and cheese with extra milk I had from the herd share program YuM!
Today - processing 450' of tomatoes.
The chickens are growing good - that makes the grass grow great!

Some nice pictures of Dinner - hard to believe a month has flown by so fast! MaudeCow has been such a great homestead cow, self raising him and milking for us. Now we are on the hunt for next years baby daddy. 😂
