What an ordeal with Nature! While I was planting tomatoes (from HHS FFA ☺️) Barley discovered a rabbits’ nest under my spirea! She carried a bunny in her mouth, and I was certain that baby was history. I’ve seen Barley gulp rabbits in two bites. But the sad wee thing peeped and cried, which made it seem like a toy. Big E and I tried to dissuade Barley, but it seemed the bunny might be dead, so we resumed our tasks, figuring survival of the fittest and all….😔
But ho! Barley returned to the spirea with the first little sibling and pulled out FOUR more bunnies! She fanned them out like playing cards, and when one squeaked, she bopped it with her paw like some real whack-a-bunny game. It was horrible! But, I actually think she was stroking them like she does Basil when they roughhouse. She even mock-chewed their fur if you know what I mean, a kind of nom-nom-nom that doesn’t do anything.
Big E got his sturdy gloves and gently scooped the traumatized creatures into a bucket. Then, with Barley in the house, I safely tucked the bunnies into the weeds among the forsythia. All of them were alive. But—no mama ☹️
The moral of the story is thank your better-than-a-rabbit mom with a four-week bouquet subscription from Merry Bees this Mother’s Day. 🐰😃🐝🌻
