Writing to you from my other happy place: the beach. But what a wonderful season I had in the flower field at Merry Bees! Thank you for the many ways you supported this humble endeavor of mine!

Time to press flowers! These daisies are actually chrysanthemums. They make lousy cut flowers. They smell awful. They grow in clusters that have such staggered bloom-times, they never look completely fresh. Their stems are woody and curvy—not very cooperative. I don’t even particularly like them in my landscape. Despite pruning, they flop outward like the limbs of a defeated flower farmer on a July afternoon!

But, the early blossoms are so sweet and pure! So I cut a slew of them for pressing. Time will tell how they turn out.

I’m thinking of offering a pressed-flower workshop in February. Maybe a Galentine’s event. Yes? ❤️

Despite these pics showing perfectly picked strawflowers, I’m lousy at growing them! 🤦‍♀️

If there are any growers out there with advice, please drop a line! My plants tend to be gangly and thick-stemmed with few flowers. Should I be pinching multiple times throughout the season? Do I need more or less fertilizer? Am I expecting more than I should?

In the meantime, I’m drying these beauts to use in Christmas wreaths. I’m excited to host the sold out workshops in November! ☺️🦃🤶

I was so honored this week to host the MD/VA Agricultural Development Officers Conference! I hope everyone enjoyed the tour of MBFF as I blathered on about floral workshops, interplanting crops, photoshoots, and my many failures (aka learning opportunities 😂)

Woven into each topic was the influence—good and bad—of being a full-time teacher.

Barley behaved herself and enjoyed all the petting! ☺️

It was a great way to wrap up the 2026 season. 😃🐝🌻

Tomorrow is the last you-pick day of 2026! I think the afternoon should be clear. I’m so happy folks came out in the wind and drizzle today!

I’ll still make bouquets as long as flowers are blooming. Pre-order for Saturday Pick-Up on the website and look for petite bouquets Southern Sol Shoppe and Creamery Connection on Fridays.

When you fan-girl freak-out because you meet the author whose book you just finished, and all the things you wanted to ask him fall out your brain…🤦‍♀️

If I could rewind, I’d ask R Eric Thomas—

Where exactly in North Baltimore County did you live in your Covid years while renovating a yard into a garden cuz we were basically neighbors AND I own a flower farm!

Also, did you know that I, like your grandmother, keep a bowl of peanut M & M’s at the ready for my grandchildren? Crazy, right?

While Eric was a great emcee, the night’s headliner was THE Ann Patchett. I made some notes for my creative writing students and my writing group. One important quality of Ann Patchett—she’s a great listener—an important skill for writers!

I look forward to reading her newest novel, Whistler. Glad I snagged a signed copy!

Thanks Jen Houseknecht for getting us tickets!
