This year, we had a milestone of our first intermittent winter grazing, releasing the goats out on February 5. This is by far the earliest we've let our animals out of winter quarters, and we owe this to planting cold season grasses in the fall.

Now, we have another record set by releasing our animals on continuous grazing the earliest we've seen, on April 3. Things are looking like they will turn out to be a bright spring...

Spring is in the air!

Wellington is showing off for his hens, who have been scratching through and aerating our rabbit manure compost pile.
You can also see the hens going through the pine straw, usefully bunching it up and making it somewhat easier to pick up and place it under the hutches.

We are new back working on the farm after taking a week off to rest and recuperate from an intensive winter.

Here, we have our mama and daddy rabbits eating freshly cut ryegrass, which was planted above and beside them. We are working to improve the garden boxes there to such an extent that we can let the rabbits roam and forage themselves without tearing up too much of the soil.

We've been planting onions and garlic for the past few weeks...make sure you get some of the finished product!

Currently we are planting spring crops, such as potatoes, onions, garlic, carrots, turnips, kale, and mustard greens. Some of these crops should be ready by around May, although we'll be posting updates on social media throughout the course of the year.

We are currently moving the leaf litter from one of our forrest pastures to use as mulch in are gardens.

This provides not only aesthetic benefits as the plants mature, but also inhibits weeds and keeps moisture in the soil.

The sounds of bedtime....
We are currently training our turkeys to roost in this portable structure, called the turkey tractor, so that they can be safe while free ranging throughout the farm.
You can see that Wellington, one of our toms, has a little trouble flying up and rather strut for his hens.

Before the winter hit, we were able to get some annual ryegrass planted. Usually, we would not be able to graze at this time of year because the grass goes dormant and we are very careful to not harm the pasture. Overseeding our permanent pasture gives us the opportunity to cut down on how much grain we are reliant on during the cold months, however, and it also makes the animals super happy.
