She said yes!

Our friend Isaac set us up by encouraging her to come help me harvest hickory nuts. I knew when she could grab them faster than me that she might just be the one!

A year and a half later, we are sure.

To us! To nuts! To us nuts!🍻

Spring burning - Prairie, forest, and savanna.

Different techniques and goals in each setting.

We love fire.

Yellowbud hickory trees can handle modest intensity fire- but not a conflagration. Easy does it.

I was excited to see a lot of multiflora rose top killed by our burns earlier this spring.

First week of harvest!

We're always looking for more trees to harvest from and this year we found some good ones! We've harvested enough to make 7 gallons of oil so far.

Mennonite convention! Here's what we were up to:

Tuesday was the Women in Leadership summit.
Wednesday through Friday was seminars, worship, and delegate sessions.

A lot of the seminar topics this year were about Palestinian liberation, confronting Christian nationalism/Christian Zionism, welcoming immigrants/immigrant Justice, and environmental issues.

There were also seminars related to biblical interpretation, improving sexual education, spirituality, and much more!

Unfortunately there weren't any seminars about agriculture. It's a shame, since Mennonites have a long history of farming, and sustainable ag is an important issue right now!

I said I'd get better at biochar... and I did!
375 gallons in a 2.25-hour burn isn't too shabby!

I'm doing work with biochar as part of a grant with . I'm exploring ways to manage forests for both conservation and nut production - and biochar is a great way to meet both of those goals.

Many conservation projects involve burning brush piles. Making those piles into biochar instead saves a lot of the carbon from going into the atmosphere (mitigating climate change) and provides a useful soil amendment.

Biochar in the soil:
-increases organic matter
-supports microbial life
-helps soil hold more water
-improves nutrient availability

I'm thinning out some of the trees that compete with oaks and hickories in the forest. Then I turn their branches into biochar and apply it under the nut trees. Over longer periods of time, I'll observe whether these trees produce nuts more abundantly and/or reliably. (I bet they will!)

The last slide is my labor summary for the day, all hiccups and delays included.

Planting barefoot trees from .farm

I asked for their smaller trees- but the taproots were still 12-18" long or longer! I had to dig holes deeper than the blade of my spade to get them in. Absolutely beautiful. Keep up the good work!

Yellowbud farm is the leader in selecting, breeding and providing superior nursery stock for yellowbird hickories. They do work with other trees as well.

Spring project: planting hickory trees for neighbors, free of charge.

Today I planted 9 hickory trees for a couple who had their house destroyed by a tornado. They just finished building their new house, and now they have some new trees, too!

Interested in free trees? Reach out in the next couple weeks! I have plenty of seeds and tree tubes!

Morels in a prairie!? Crazy. I was helping with a prescribed burn and almost lit these on fire. They were over 100 feet from the closest tree (probably 150).

The last pic is two frying recipes, one with butter and heavy batter (right), and one with hickory oil and light batter (left). Both were delicious, but the hickory oil brought out the mushroom flavor better.
