This month Crazy Woman honors Ruth Edna Kelley. She was a librarian, writer, and lover of folklore whose curiosity led her to explore the history behind one of our favorite holidays. In 1919, she published The Book of Hallowe’en, one of the earliest books devoted entirely to the holiday’s origins, traditions, superstitions, and celebrations. Rather than dismissing old customs as strange or silly, Kelley believed they were stories worth understanding and preserving. Her work helped document the fascinating history of Halloween and continues to give us a glimpse into how the holiday evolved over time. A curious woman with a passion for the unusual, Kelley quite literally wrote the book on Halloween 🎃
