We have been growing and shipping organic fruit trees across the country for over 30 years. Our nursery is very much a family effort; we plant, graft, prune, w**d, water and harvest our trees with only a bit of outstanding seasonal assistance. As winter approaches, our labors meander away from the open field and into the office. We turn our attention toward the tools indoors in order to prepare fo

r our annual winter send off of our precious heirloom fruit trees. We’re excited to share our bounty of bareroot trees which are a reflection of our labors throughout the last two seasons. As always, our nursery is centered on the rich history and future discoveries that our heirloom apple trees provide through the years. We continue to discover the unique flavors, textures and lore that surround our heirloom fruit trees and look forward to extending this experience to your home.

Just returned from the orchard with bushels of fruit. Wealthy apples showing great color, Stanley plums just starting to sweeten, Howard Miracle similar with few harvested, the yellow Golden Nectar & Flavor King producing several hundred pounds of fruit. Canning is happening as well as a gurgling stomach consuming bit too much fruit I suppose.

Early this morning discovered some of our favorite early apples ready for harvest. This is the Winekist apple which is sharp apple with plenty sweetness this season. Consistent deep crimson flesh from year to year. Wonderful for cider and the red-fleshed apples make great dark-pink tart applesauce. As with most summer apples they only keep for a few weeks so eat immediately or make apple sauce or cider.

Harvesting our Dixon peaches this afternoon. One of our favorite options for dessert in middle of summer with its classic old time peach flavor. The Dixon peach tree comes highly recommended to us from an old peach farmer and pomologist from the central valley. In addition to being used in canning and preserves, cling peaches can also be used in peach pies. Because they are less juicy, the result will be a less runny peach pie, which can be a pleasant benefit for cooks who struggle with watery peach pies. The Dixon peach has orange flesh and a distinctive taste somewhat reminiscent of apricots and citrus. Non-melting (clingstones) types have flesh that remain firm in the canning jar.

Picking the last of our Montmorency Sour Cherries today. Thinking of juicing & making gummies. The juice is jam-packed with vitamins and nutrients. This afternoon we harvested our ume trees. They’re small sour apricots, commonly referred to as a plum. These fruits are best soaked in vinegar & brine. So we are gearing up to pickle. The finished product is most often called umeboshi. Umeboshi, Japanese pickled plums, is one of Japan’s signature pickled fruits. They’ll bring depth, color, and rich flavor to vinaigrettes, salads, noodles, sandwiches & rice balls.

I have an ambivalent relationship to deer. They’re my original deep appreciation to natural world as a child, but they do enjoy eating our trees. This time of year they primarily eat new growth on trees so their damage can be overlooked. Best keep close eye on your trees to see if someone has been browsing in the night.
