Meet Charlie!!! 🦅 He disappeared two weeks ago, flew from Santa Barbara to Paso, posted up at Alta Colina for the weekend, and hung out until the internet did its thing and he was reunited with his people. Yes internet!

A Tasting Room guest (hi Vanessa!), who just happens to have falconry knowledge, spotted Charlie perched in an oak outside the Tasting Room. She clocked the bells on his legs and knew that means he’s domesticated. We’d seen him since Friday, heard the bells, and convinced ourselves we were hallucinating. Surprise falconry knowledge for the win!

Cue the teamwork…Vanessa could get close enough for a photo, our crew (hi Kelly!) posted on Facebook, and within a couple hours Charlie’s people were reuniting with him in front of our Tasting Room. Internet did it right yesterday!

Turns out Charlie is a Harris’s Hawk with a day job. He works in bird control at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara. How crazy is this story?! Love to see a reunion.

Bob with a soil densitometer in hand? He is in HEAVEN! What’s a soil densitometer you ask?!…

Once soil gets too compacted because a 4ish ton tractor has driven down every vine row for the last 20+ years, roots simply cannot push through, which limits vine health long-term. So Bob’s goal is to sit this tool to map the vineyard block by block, row by row, mid-row versus undervine, to better understand where the soil is tight and where it is thriving.

The goal isn’t to fix soil with chemicals or force, but to let roots do the work. With a clearer map, we can double down in compacted areas using thoughtful cover crop choices and targeted compost extracts to encourage deeper, healthier root growth.

Is this common practice? Honestly, we are not sure! Any wine folks out there doing this?! Seriously, let us know. What we do know is that better information leads to better farming decisions.

Happy dirt, happy vines, happy wines. Taste ‘em here daily 10am to 4pm or head to the Shop at altacolina.com and stock up.

SPOTTED in 2026! Why not start with a new year photo dump…

1) purple top turnip from last winter’s cover crop planting
2) 3” of rain in last three days
3) a noteworthy chicken feather wine label on a bottle of Gruner! Feelings were mixed on this aesthetic choice 🐓
4) confused rain gauges after the Christmas Eve storm…we’re going with 4” in our ongoing tally because SCIENCE and PRECISION 🤣
5) 2026 sparklers
6) 2026 sparklers after chicken feather Gruner!

We’re thrilled for some solid winter rain. It will help this year’s cover crop thrive, which in turn sets soils up for the season, which in turn sets up the vines! Plus a little break in the middle to get excited for the new year. Let’s do this 2026!
