🦜 SPECIES SPOTLIGHT: QUAKER PARROT (MONK PARAKEET) 💚

We’ve made our way through quite a few of the conures, so now we’re moving on to another little parrot with a personality about 10 times bigger than its body — the Quaker Parrot, also known as the Monk Parakeet!

Quakers are intelligent, funny, busy little birds that can make absolutely wonderful companions — but don’t let that cute face fool you. 😂 They can also be stubborn, territorial, loud and VERY opinionated.

💚 QUICK FACTS
• Average size: around 11–12 inches
• Weight: roughly 90–150 grams
• Lifespan: commonly 20–30+ years with proper care
• Native to South America
• Naturally green and gray, although captive breeding has produced colors such as blue, yellow, white and other mutations
• Often excellent talkers and capable of developing surprisingly large vocabularies

🏠 THE LITTLE HOMEOWNERS

One of the coolest things about Quakers is something you don’t normally see in parrots: they build nests out of sticks.

And we’re not talking about a cute little bird nest.

Wild Quakers build huge communal structures where multiple pairs may live in separate chambers within the same nest. Their ability to establish feral colonies is also one reason ownership is restricted or prohibited in some states. Always check your state and local laws before bringing home a Quaker.

😈 “THIS IS MY CAGE.”

If you’ve ever met a cage-territorial Quaker, you already know. 😂

Some Quakers become extremely protective of their cage, food bowls, toys or favorite spaces. A bird that happily interacts with you away from the cage may suddenly turn into a tiny green security guard when you reach into its territory.

Understanding that behavior and working WITH the bird instead of forcing interactions goes a long way.

🧠 SMART BIRD = BUSY BIRD

These guys need things to do.

Foraging opportunities, shreddable toys, destructible toys, training, climbing and regular interaction are important. A bored Quaker can quickly find its own entertainment — and you probably aren’t going to appreciate what it chooses. 😂

🔊 ARE THEY QUIET?

Nope.

They may not have the same ear-piercing scream as some larger parrots, but Quakers can be very vocal. They chatter, call, talk, fuss and absolutely know how to make themselves heard.

❤️ WHO ARE THEY GOOD FOR?

For the right person, Quakers can be hilarious, affectionate, interactive little companions. But they still require the same commitment we talk about with EVERY parrot — proper diet, an appropriately sized cage, enrichment, veterinary care, patience and years of commitment.

Small does not mean easy.

Do your research on the bird you are considering — not just the bird you think is cute.

🦜 SPECIES SPOTLIGHT: BLACK-HEADED CAIQUE

Don’t let the size fool you. The Black-Headed Caique may be a medium-small parrot, but there is absolutely nothing small about the personality packed into that body.

Black-Headed Caiques are native to northern South America and are instantly recognizable by their black cap, orange-yellow neck and thighs, green wings, white belly, and bright orange legs.

They’re often described as the clowns of the parrot world, and that description fits them pretty well. Caiques are energetic, playful, curious, stubborn, busy little birds that seem to approach life at full speed.

They’re famous for hopping instead of walking, rolling around on their backs, wrestling with toys, hanging upside down, and “surfing” — rubbing their bodies through hair, blankets, towels, clothing, or anything else that apparently looks like a good place to wiggle.

But the clown reputation can make people underestimate them.

A Caique is still a parrot with a powerful beak and strong opinions.

They can become overstimulated very quickly, and playful behavior can turn into a hard bite with very little warning if you don’t understand their body language. They can also be territorial, possessive, stubborn, and incredibly determined when they want something.

⚠️ Caiques are also NOT known for being particularly bird-friendly.

Some individuals may tolerate other birds, but Caiques can be extremely rough and aggressive toward other parrots. Their fearless personality can make them willing to challenge birds much larger than themselves. They should never be assumed safe with another bird simply because they seem playful or curious.

🏡 WHAT DO THEY NEED?

A roomy cage with plenty of opportunities to climb and move. Caiques are extremely active and need toys they can chew, shred, manipulate, wrestle with, and forage through.

They also need substantial supervised time outside the cage and interaction with their people. A bored Caique can invent its own entertainment — and you may not appreciate what it chooses. 😂

A good diet should include a quality pellet or appropriate balanced base diet along with plenty of fresh vegetables, leafy greens, healthy grains and legumes, limited fruit, and appropriate nuts and seeds.

📏 SIZE: Usually around 9 inches long
⚖️ WEIGHT: Roughly 130–170 grams, although individuals vary
⏳ LIFESPAN: Commonly 25–30+ years with proper care

Black-Headed Caiques are intelligent, hilarious, affectionate, mischievous and endlessly entertaining in the right home.

But they are not little stuffed animals with orange pants.

They require structure, enrichment, patience, supervision and someone who appreciates a parrot that wakes up every morning ready to choose chaos. 😂

As always, research the species BEFORE bringing one home. Loving how a parrot looks or laughing at cute videos online is very different from living with that personality for the next few decades.

Linux started out as the Chop Supervisor this morning, but didn't catch that I chopped up leek instead of bok choy and had to dump a whole bowl of chop outside to the farm animals(leek is toxic to parrots) so I had to trade the supervisor in for the Chop Manager, Maui 🥰🦜she did good!

I had no idea how incredible this sweet breed would be and omg to say I'm in love and just obsessed with him is an understatement 💙🦜 goodness this lil guy is precious! So snuggly, affectionate and so much fun!!!! He kept flying to me and wanting me to hold him while I was sorting laundry and just hangs on my shirt to be near me and then fell asleep 🤣 sweet Jasper!

This week has been amazing. Having these 2 home finally completes our flock and we couldn't be happier. They both are just so incredible, loving, affectionate, snuggly and sweet. Biggest reason is the love, attention and hand feeding done by Royal Avian Specialties, LLC / Royal Avian Plus 😍 cannot thank them enough for loving and caring for our babies!
KaiLani and Jasper are settling in just perfect!!
