Perfectly said, in New York it is illegal to pass on a double yellow line.
I was asked “ what is the proper way to pass farm equipment on the road”?
Well that is a question that is so hard to answer as every state and every farmer has a different opinion on it. So you need to find out for your state the laws and go from there.
Vermont is a special state when it comes to farm laws. Our yellow line is a suggestion as it’s legal to pass on a sold line. It just tells you it’s not the safest.
Our take on it is pass if it’s safe but know that farm equipment may be turning at any time. Pay attention to the equipment. If they are over the center line it may be turning into a field or farm. You really just do not know. Some tractors have turn signals some don’t . Hay wages do not and you can’t see the truck pulling its lights.
Give them space to do what they need. They are just trying to get from a to b. They are not going slow to p**s you off. They are going as fast as they can that’s safe for them.
Also know that if they are hauling something it probably out weights you and can’t stop well! So do not pull out in front of them! 🤦♀️
The best advise i can give is pay attention and slow down. Don’t always be in a hurry. That farmer probably doesn’t have far to go, and we want them to All come home safe.
