This is reality now for most farmers, my dairy included. I always tell people, if I wanted to be rich, I’d go back into medicine. I have people always tell me “get a job” or “you need to take a salary”.
Here’s reality: just because a few YouTubers or influencers can make some money does not mean every farmer makes tons of money. I’m glad those people maybe “made it work”. But most don’t and rely on outside income.
I do this because of my passion and my past. No mom should have to fight the battle I fought and almost loose her child because of doctors and government. People want authentic farmers and relationships. They want real food and the truth. That’s why I do this. I do this for people and I do this to serve others.
There is something about farming that I don't think people outside agriculture always realize.
A whole lot of farmers have another job.
Or their spouse does.
Or both of them do.
And I don't mean a tiny handful of struggling farms that just haven't quite figured out this whole agriculture thing yet. According to USDA data, in 2019 about 71% of U.S. farm households had at least one household member earning wages or a salary from an off-farm job. Seventy-one percent. That's roughly seven out of every ten farm households. And according to the 2022 Census of Agriculture, 62% of individual producers worked off the farm at least some during the year. Forty percent worked off the farm 200 days or more.
Just sit with that one for a minute.
There are farmers who get up, do chores, go work an eight-hour shift somewhere else, come home, and farm again. There are farm wives and farm husbands going to work every morning whose paycheck may be paying for groceries, health insurance, the mortgage, school clothes, electricity, or all the other decidedly unromantic things required to keep a family functioning while farm income gets poured back into seed, feed, fertilizer, fuel, repairs, equipment, veterinary bills, land payments, and approximately 4,783 other things agriculture can find to spend money on before anyone gets around to asking whether the farmer would personally like a paycheck.
And the numbers get even more interesting when you look at household income. USDA reported that in 2022, 84% of farm households received at least half of their total household income from off-farm sources.
Eighty-four percent.
Now, that number needs a little clarification because "off-farm income" doesn't exclusively mean somebody punching a time clock. It can include wages, nonfarm businesses, Social Security, investment income, and other sources. But wages are a huge piece of it. USDA's 2024 data show that 55% of all off-farm income received by farm operator households came specifically from wages and salaries earned by operators, spouses, and other household members.
So when somebody looks at a farmer and thinks, Well, they own all that land. Look at those tractors. Look at those cattle. They must be doing pretty well...
Maybe.
But land doesn't buy groceries unless you sell it. A tractor might be worth more than your car while simultaneously owing the bank a substantial amount of money and requiring a repair that costs roughly the GDP of a small island nation. Cattle are assets, but unfortunately Walmart remains stubbornly opposed to accepting a 1,400-pound Holstein as payment at checkout. And gross farm income is most definitely not the same thing as the amount of money the farmer gets to take into the house at the end of the year.
That off-farm job isn't necessarily evidence that the farm failed.
Sometimes that off-farm job is part of how the farm succeeds.
It provides steady cash flow when agriculture absolutely does not. It may provide health insurance and retirement benefits. It pays household expenses so farm revenue can stay in the operation. USDA has actually asked farm households why they work off the farm, and among small family farms with off-farm employment, 88% said the income was more reliable. About 75% said it was more lucrative. Across farm sizes, about 40% cited financial pressure related to the farm, including low commodity prices or low farm revenue.
Which means there are people all across rural America doing two jobs so they can keep doing the one they love.
There are farmers climbing into tractors after getting home from work. There are spouses leaving the farm every morning because their job in town provides the family's health insurance. There are people doing chores before sunrise, changing clothes, going to an office, construction site, school, hospital, factory, shop, or wherever else they work, then changing clothes again when they get home because apparently smelling vaguely like livestock at the staff meeting is frowned upon.
And somehow we've gotten used to this being normal.
We talk constantly about supporting farmers. We talk about protecting family farms. We like pictures of barns at sunset and combines rolling through golden fields and calves standing beside little kids in rubber boots.
But one of the realities behind those pictures is that for a huge percentage of farm families, agriculture alone isn't paying the household bills.
Sometimes the person helping keep the farm alive isn't sitting on the tractor.
They're the one driving away from it every morning to go to work.
