“Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you: Jesus Christ and the American Soldier. One died for your soul; the other for your freedom.”
I know a lot of people take issue with saying “Happy Memorial Day,” and I understand why. But it’s not up to any of us to dictate how someone else honors those who died for our freedom.
What other greeting would you prefer? “Have a miserable day because heroes died for you?”
Notice I didn’t say they “gave their lives.” American warriors don’t passively give their lives — they fight like no other force on earth with one goal: to make the other guy die for his country. It’s not pretty. It’s ugly, gruesome, terrifying, and brutal. But it is done for our freedom.
To me, Memorial Day isn’t a day of mourning. It’s a day of solemn respect — a moment of silence for those heroes — followed by celebration of what their sacrifice secured for all of us.
