This cheerful, comforting song was a Sunday school favorite for many American children, my husband included. Yesterday, after a long day of branding cattle, it echoed in our minds with fresh meaning. There’s something about standing in the dust and noise of it all—calves bawling, irons hot, hands at work—that makes the truth of it settle a little deeper: none of this is really ours.

While not a traditional hymn, the song carries a deeply biblical truth in simple, singable lines: God’s ownership of all creation, and His faithful care for His children.

The title comes from Psalm 50:10—“For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills.” It’s a reminder that God not only created the world, but sustains it, and provides for His people out of His abundance. What feels scarce to us is never scarce to Him.

The author, John W. Peterson, was born in Lindsborg, Kansas, in 1921. He flew dangerous missions over the “China Hump” during World War II before devoting his life to ministry through music. After studying at Moody Bible Institute and the American Conservatory of Music, he went on to lead Singspiration, a major sacred music publisher. Over his lifetime, Peterson wrote more than 1,000 songs and compiled the beloved hymnal Great Hymns of the Faith.

Though he is well known for larger works like cantatas and musicals, He Owns the Cattle on a Thousand Hills remains a sweet example of his gift for making Scripture memorable, especially for children. Peterson passed away in 2006, but his songs continue to echo in churches, homes, and even branding pens.

And maybe that’s where it lands most tenderly, in the middle of ordinary work and real need. When the weather is uncertain, the margins feel thin, and the days are long, this simple truth steadies the heart: the One who owns it all is also the One who cares for us.

There is a sweet spot in the Spring when the mosquitoes haven’t hatched, there are ticks but not TOO many ticks, the trees haven’t leafed out yet and it doesn’t reach 90 degrees by noon.
Those are the days for “low pasture reclamation”.
The days when you literally have to chainsaw, drag, poison and wood chip the land back into submission.
The flame thrower option is never off the table.
