NASA told him he had minutes before his capsule burned up or skipped into deep space. So, Gordon Cooper pulled out a grease pencil.

May 16, 1963. Gordon Cooper is orbiting Earth for the 22nd time, squeezed inside a capsule so tight he can barely turn his head.

He fires the rockets manually. He pulls the chutes manually.

The result? Faith 7 splashes down just 4.4 miles from the recovery ship - the most accurate landing in the entire Mercury program.

Technology will fail. Systems will crash. But when everything goes black, raw skill, composure under extreme pressure, and mastery of the basics win every single time.

NASA learned that lesson instantly: after Faith 7, hand-flying training became mandatory for every single astronaut.
