As it did in 2002, the LDS Church is again providing a "significant financial donation" as well as the use of some of its property to the Utah 2034 Winter Olympics. The agreement was announced in Italy, days before the start of the 2026 Winter Games.

WE WILL FILL THE LAKE BY 2034 🇺🇸

Big credit to the Utah Department of Natural Resources and the Utah Forestry, Fire & State Lands for stepping up to protect the Great Salt Lake.

By securing these assets, the state is keeping more water in the lake, addressing long-standing environmental risks, and supporting advanced mineral development.

This is a commonsense investment in Utah’s future, and in one of our most important natural resources.

RECORD LOW SNOWPACK: 67 of 139 snowpack measuring sites in Utah are now experiencing their all-time lowest levels to date (OCT 1 - FEB 1) since records began in 1981. When averaging out the numbers statewide, this the worst we’ve seen it at this time in the season - 57% of normal.

That’s roughly HALF of the measuring sites in Utah that are in uncharted territory. Even when looking at one of the longest snow record keeping sites at Alta’s Guard House, we find a similar story. Those records at that individual site date back to 1944. Worst season on record was 1976-1977 when Alta had an abysmal 82” by FEB 1st, Alta Guard has picked up 126” so far this season. It’s very possible that winter was one of Utah’s worst on record, but we can’t say for sure because statewide snowpack records system has only been in place since 1981.

SILVER LINING: Utah’s statewide precipitation is running 90% of normal. All this means is that the soil moisture is in good shape, but we still need snowpack to refill our reservoirs! Our lakes and reservoirs sit at 66% of capacity as a statewide average right now. We’ve got work to do, let’s hope we can turn things on with a pattern change second half this month!
