I've been harvesting castings for about 9 weeks now and they are getting really consistent in texture and moisture. These were sifted through a 1/8" screen to remove any remaining wood chips. The worms have multiplied dramatically.

Shish*to peppers make a fantastic and simple appetizer simply by blistering them in virgin olive oil with a little sea salt and maybe a bit of garlic if you're so inclined. You simply bite the entire pepper right off the stem. They are delicious and so easy to make. The Shish*to plant produces a large number of peppers and once they turn red, they can be dried and ground as a sweet Paprika substitute. Shish*to plants are available for purchase on our website and at Ag Natural at 400 Idaho Maryland Road in Grass Valley.

Plant of the Week. Red Rocket Cayenne.
Cayenne peppers are prolific and most of us have a shaker of dried Cayenne pepper flakes in our kitchen. Why not grow your own organic Cayenne? Great on a pizza, or almost any dish that needs a little extra zing, the Red Rocket Cayenne is both sweet and hot. Expect about 40 5-6" bright red pods per plant. These peppers are quick drying and you can dry them in the sun, in the oven, or in a dehydrator and then grind the dried pods as needed to spice up your meals. Plant starts available for order now at peardalefarm.com

Most of these varieties will be available as produce during the season. We hope to see you at the farmstand! Goodbye, snow.

We're bursting at the seams with tomato and pepper plant starts. We are now taking online orders for plant starts at peardalefarm.com for pickup in mid-May when it should be safe to plant. Check out all the available varieties of peppers and tomatoes. They are all organic and grown from seed at Peardale Farm. Limited availability, so order now!

Worms arrive tomorrow! I decided to start producing my own vermicast for use on the farm, so I built a CFT (Continuous Flow Through) worm bin and am waiting for my worms to arrive from TerraVesco in Sonoma. Here are some photos of the CFT. The concept is that the red wiggler worms which live in the top 4-6 inches of the bedding eat their way toward the top of the bin leaving their castings below them, worm-free. The CFT has a cutter bar that slices off the bottom 1" of the bed and the castings fall through the bottom. Thank you to local Ace Welding for fabricating the cutter and cutter frame. The rest of the bin is built on top of a second-hand trailer using scrap lumber and 1/4" HDPE (High Density Poly Ethylene) panels. The bed is first lined with a layer of damp Kraft paper, then a layer of fluffed, damp peat moss. This serves as bedding, not food, so the worms are motivated to move upward. Above the peat, a 2" layer of compost is put down, then the worms, then another layer of compost. As the worms consume the compost, additional layers are added until the castings are deep enough that you can begin to harvest. The cutter is pulled through the bed using boat trailer winches at each end. In cold weather, a seedling heat mat can be placed on top of the bed to give the worms a temperate environment.

It's been a long, wet winter. Peardale Farm is already a pretty wet location. We'll see how long it takes to dry out as the weather finally warms up. I'm hopeful that our switch to no-till is going to make it easier to get into the fields sooner (no tractor) and we'll just follow nature's lead as the fields begin to become workable.

Usually, I germinate my starts in a couple of germination chambers inside the barn at the farm. When the big snow came and the power went out, I had nine flats of seedlings that were suddenly without heat and light. Long story short, with the depth of the snow, I had to buy a pair of snowshoes and sled them out. I converted an old tack room in our barn at home into a propagation room and was able to keep them going.

Now, we're back on track to begin selling starts in Mid-May, after Mother's Day. Here's a photo of the rescue germination room I set up at home. I picked up a broken wine cooler on craigslist and converted it to a germination chamber, and put insulating pads, heat mats, and LED lights on some NSF shelving to accomodate the growing population of seedlings. We've finally had to move some tomato starts out to the hoophouse where a small propane heater is keeping the overnight temps above 50. The tomatoes can handle it. They are also on heat mats and under extra light. It is still magical to see the seeds we place in the soil grow into healthy little plants!
