Annual PSA that poison hemlock is starting to grow and it's the best time to hit it with some herbicide. It tries to creep into our pastures from the road side and neighbor, so we walk the edges of our property and spot treat whatever we see growing. It's one of the only vibrant green things right now so it's easy to spot among all the brown grass and brush. Nasty stuff that grows to be 8'+ tall, I prefer to get rid of it while it's small. Fortunately it's an easy plant to eradicate if you actually set your mind to removing it. I wish the neighboring farms around here would take it seriously but unfortunately I see huge swaths of it. If you see it, get rid of it!

5 years ago today... Veteran's Desert Lightning at a few weeks old here. He was a chatty little thing and had many shenanigans as a kid. Literally full of personality and back talk. He's working at another farm now, but he sure made an impression at ours

How I like to see bucks coming out of a hard winter. Good hay, a bit of grain, and loose minerals. Shelter that keeps them fully out of the harsh winter elements. Helps when they are good eaters! See Camelot Cattle Co Odin stuffing his face

Since we are blessed with some spring-ish weather this weekend, we will be spring cleaning the doe barn. We are still stuck with this less than ideal barn, but a barn is a barn, and it's better than no barn at all... Improvements are happening this year once real spring hits, and the first thing that's going to happen is a new, larger door right in the middle (like where it was supposed to be). And then a large overhang for shade and protection from the rain/snow that wants to blow in. Let's just say, we've got plans!

Just like that, the tie stalls are finally complete and the horses are enjoying their meals out of the wind and rain. Been a long summer of working in the barn to get these ready before winter!
