Chicken bone broth coming up! I didn’t get a video recorded, but here’s what I did:

•whole roasted chicken carcass-some skin and meat left on, as well as connective tissue/fat.
•3 whole skin on carrots- washed and quartered
•whole red onion halved, then quartered.
•a bunch of garlic (to taste, we like a lot)
•a hefty splash of Apple Cider Vinegar to help draw the nutrients from the bones. I’d say less than 1/4 cup? I just kinda eyeballed it.
•a few bay leaves
•1-2 tablespoons peppercorns
•1-2 tablespoons parsley- fresh or dried works
•6-8 cups of water

Cooking low and slow in my pressure cooker. I have it set to low for 6 hours, but I’m still experimenting with my settings.

I’m just using what I have on hand, but you can add whatever you’d like! Celery is a great addition, I just don’t have any. You can also save up veggies scraps by freezing them and throwing them in as well. It’s a great low-waste option!

Once this is done I will strain it and place into measured bags and freeze for use all winter long. You can also freeze in widemouth jars, just allow ample headspace and freeze with the lid off until solid. Any jar with a neck is at risk of breaking.

For my next batch I want to get my hands on some chicken feet😅 they’re loaded with high amounts of collagen which is what makes that gelatinous looking broth you see.

Summer is ending, but that means Golden Rod is blooming. I had to take advantage of the only things still looking pretty.

Golden Rod gets a bad rap for causing allergies, but actually it’s the lookalike Ragweed that causes those sniffles!

This app is my favorite for plant identification! If you’re like me and have a curious mind this is the app for you. I’m always scanning plants I don’t recognize. Now if you’re using it to identify medicinal herbs or anything you will be consuming, be sure to double check against another resource. There are a lot of dangerous look alikes that could get you into trouble.

It’s time to start making bone broth for soup season! I will be making some in the next few weeks, so I will try to make a reel on everything I do(if I remember). I love having broth in the freezer for soup season! It’s so easy, and such a great way to use every piece of the animal.

What’s your favorite soup during the fall and winter months?

What am I straining? Hint: it’s an herb that is known to help stop bleeding and grows in most yards!

Zinnia seed saving. Zinnias are one of my favorite flowers to grow, they’re sooo easy and you only have to plant them once! You can either do what I’m doing and save the dried seed heads to replant in the spring, or if you like the location their in just crumble up the dried heads over the soil! I am saving this year as I plan to add another area of zinnias, but I will also be dropping seeds in this same place for next year! If you’re wanting to keep a certain variety you will have to tag your plant so you will know which one it is, I like the various colors and types so I just throw them all together.

A stunning start to this beautiful Monday! Rain moving into the area as I type.

📸 Nixon Bridge looking East. One of my favorite “snapshots” to drive past. There’s been a couple mornings the sunrise has bounced off the river in the most beautiful way, and occasionally you’ll catch a Blue Heron trolling to breakfast. A photographers dream.
