Did you know Newton has a growing network of free, locally available food sources? 🌳🍐

Through Falling Fruit and the Harvey County Foraging Passport brought about by the Harvey County Food & Farm Council, community members can discover fruit and nut trees throughout Newton and Harvey County, including spots like Washington Park and other public spaces. The project helps reduce food waste, connect people to local food, and celebrate the abundance already growing around us.

Through this initiative and partnership with the Harvey County Food & Farm Council, even more is on the way! The City plans to plant 25 red mulberry trees and 25 pawpaw trees along Sand Creek Trail and Centennial Park in spring 2027, helping expand Newton’s edible landscape for years to come.

Want to explore? Visit FallingFruit.org to find mapped edible plants, add your own trees or bushes, and learn more about local foraging opportunities. Foraging Passports are also available at City Hall as well as at Peace Connections, 209 S. Pine St. in Newton.

If you harvest, remember:
• Only pick what you can confidently identify
• Follow the “20% rule” to help keep it sustainable for everyone 🌱

Need a little self care after your long weekend? 🥱
Ashley still has virtual herbal consultation spots available for tomorrow!
Comment for the sign up link 🙂

What is a consult?
The goal of an Herbal Consultation is to learn specific ways to support your well-being and achieve your health goals.

You will be able to share about yourself, why you are meeting, and what you hope to accomplish. Ashley will ask questions to best understand what is going on and what is important to you. You can share as much as you feel comfortable sharing-your session is private, confidential, and a safe place to be heard and seen.
After we have a good picture of what’s going on and what you are hoping to improve, we will work together to create a plan tailored to you and your needs using herbs and/or lifestyle supports and changes.

We had a great walk with a homeschool group in Inola yesterday…so good in fact that we completely forgot to take any pictures besides of this hawthorn. 😅 We loved all the questions and the excitement from kids and parents alike. 💚🌱
It was pretty exciting to find this fruiting hawthorn in the wild. We rarely find them in the wild and have been concerned that we will continue to see fewer of them as the prevalence of Eastern Red Cedar increases because of their susceptibility to cedar rust. This one is definitely affected by it, but still holding on. Hopefully we will continue to find more and maybe even some wild ones that are more resistant too.

Great class on solar by our friends at Tnt Homesteading put on by the Cherokee County Homestead Ladies Gathering. We’ve been to their fully off grid homestead and know they’re living what they’re sharing. Learned a lot and feel much more prepared to begin our solar project. If you’re interested in learning more head over to their page or follow them on YouTube.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms! Ashley is super happy, because Stewart took her to White Dog Chiles tonight for their $1 plants and was able to fill up a box! The peppers and tomatoes we get from there are always super beautiful and productive. 🍅🫑
So if you lost plants in the hail, didn’t start enough, or want some other varieties, please head over and help her clear off the shelves for the season. 🌶️😁
