Southern New Hampshire’s dry hot weather this summer favors few plants in your garden, but the grape vines love it. Low fungus damage and dry weather helps mature the grapes faster and build tight flavors and high sugar in the berries. The Marquette harvest was extrodinary at 26 Brix, and the Riesling which are now under bird netting is at 23 Brix with good hang time left to produce a great mid-late October harvest crop. Probably the best Riesling vintage so far at Prelude. Who says you can’t grow Riesling in Sothern New Hampshire???

Our last hobby production of 95 bottles of Champagne-style Estate Rasberry-,Blackberry-, and straight Apple sparkling wine. Perfect disgorging temperature. Yeast plugs popped right out attached to the bottle caps.

Today we picked the late harvest Riesling (120 pounds, Brix 23) and a small batch of Pinot Gris and La Crescent. Yellow jackets were present because of the high sugar, but we show mutual respect. We won’t swat and they won’t sting.

Nice to have vintages back in the cellar aging again after a disappointing 2023 weather year. 68 liters of Marquette pressed and in stainless yesterday with the red hands to prove it. Estate Riesling and a few different sparkling wines still on the list for this fall. Maybe even potentially our first test vintage from Michigan.

A warm dry summer means the vines are happy and the grape production and quality has potential for a great vintage. Marquettes to be harvested next week (bird nets mostly holding off the nasty cat birds), and hoping to go for a late harvest Riesling (nets going up soon) to be harvested in October.
