The emus are growing up so fast. Look at that itty bitty wing! Good thing they can run like mad as God certainly didn’t intend them to fly anywhere. Their real feathers are coming in. One of the things I loved the most when we had emus many years ago was the way they would shake their body & make their quite stiff feathers rattle. It is funny & intimidating at the same time. And the older of the little emus has made his throaty “ha-rumph” sound at me a few times as well. So fun!

Yes, we have plenty of green grassy pasture & scenic areas under the trees but Brook & one of her lambs were hanging out behind the stable. The other lamb had wiggled her way into the barn & couldn’t find a way back out so was baaaaa-ing her head off just a few yards away. Mama hasn’t quite weaned the twins yet but looked quite resigned to the fact that one of her little girls was off on a toot again. I let the lamb out. Brook barely looked up for the family reunion. She’s a good mama who was just hoping for a quiet moment. Some of us can relate.

We will be demonstrating & vending at Twin Creeks Lavender on July 2nd so I ran down to cut some gorgeous lavender to play around with. I’ve got ideas…. And if you know me, you will understand how tickled I was to have a special little friend join me for a bit as I gathered stems.

Ran to town. Came home to an oops. We’d had an eye on this old pine for a while & knew it would clear the back fence when it finally did fall. We were right. All is good.

The passion flower vine is blooming. Passiflora incarnata. The scent is amazing & there is always lots of insect & bird activity. If you look closely in the second picture you will see two Gulf Fritillary caterpillars. Granddaughter Margo was actually the one who spotted these first two of the season. I love seeing them & I especially love that the grandchildren are as intrigued with God’s creation as I am!

A rather fuzzy day. We found a tiger moth caterpillar & a tussock moth caterpillar. Although they do not sting or bite, those furry bristles can break off in your skin & cause irritation. All the children know to admire them but not touch them.

Granddaughter Jane dyed this lovely sock yarn. It is squishy soft with a nice bronze stellina sparkle added to the spin. I love to let the grandchildren work along side me & Jane has been dyeing for years. This will go into the retail stock & she will get the profits. She dyed up 2 skeins of this base & I also let her dye another base that is alpaca & cotton. That is still drying but I can’t wait to see what it looks like once it has its final wind off.

I went out to mow & almost immediately got distracted by this hummingbird clearwing moth. It was enjoying the perennial phlox that have preformed beautifully for about the last 10 years. I love the scent & apparently this moth enjoys the flowers as well. I’ll mow later this afternoon.

Orange-tipped oakworm moths. The larger one is the female. The colors are beautiful & we have enough things growing around for their caterpillars to eat that they don’t cause enough damage for me to worry. I just enjoy their pretty colors, take a few pictures & walk on.

The emu chicks are growing. They still find the shiny parts of my phone to be simply fascinating. We sit with them throughout the day & they enjoy being petted. We also wrap our arms around them & they do not flinch or struggle. Our previous emus were quite friendly & we are hoping these will be as well so we want them to enjoy our company. I usually whistle to them before I open their stall door. Earlier this week I was whistling as I crossed the barnyard but before I went into the stable I peeked through the window of their stall. They were standing attentively at the stall door seemingly waiting for me to open it for a visit. That made me happy.
