Sylvy insisted on doing it herself! This was a bit of a hill but she pulled & pulled. She was almost at the top when her feet flew out from under her & she landed on her side in the gravel. She rolled over without a fuss, grabbed the wagon handle again & kept going. Feisty little one! We always enjoy visiting in Augusta but today was extra special.

I was going down a rather quiet road yesterday when I saw a box turtle in the road. No one was coming for as far as I could see so I made a quick stop & moved the Eastern box turtle. I put it down on the grass that it was originally heading towards. The whole process took me less than a minute & I didn’t see another car as I was stopped but when I began up the road again two trucks passed me heading towards where the turtle would have still been had I left it to its own pace.

I was working at deadheading a few petunias in the planter when I came across this nicely color-coordinated caterpillar. It is a to***co budworm & probably not the best thing to leave on the petunias but I’m pretty much “live & let live” & so far I’ve only found this one. I’ll keep an eye out but in the meantime I’ll enjoy the pretty picture.

See that tiny bit of pink above the coleus? I found the first passiflora incarnata (Maypop) bloom today. We have a huge arbor that will be covered with vines before long. The pollinators love it! And before long it will also be a host plant for lots of Gulf Fritillary caterpillars. We never planted this passionflower. It was in the yard when we moved here in 1998. We’ve learned to love it but have to keep it in check or there would not be anything else able to grow in the backyard.

Last year our grandson, Marlon, was visiting when it was time to dig potatoes. He helped. I laughed at the end of this winter when I realized there were a few little potato plants sprouting in the spot where we’d dug but obviously hadn’t found all the potatoes. Just a few days ago I realized the plants were dying back so it was time to dig. What a pleasant little surprise from some overlooked potatoes.

I stopped by ArtfullyGVL to drop off some new yarn yesterday. The space is beautiful but I was particularly taken by the older folding tables. As I drove home I thought a lot about the tables & all that went into creating what I saw as their beauty. So much excitement, creativity, challenge, perseverance, sharing, patience, discovery. And more. All so beautiful in so many ways.

Now that I’m done teaching handicraft for this school year, I’ve got time to teach at in Anderson. Erin & I will be doing 3 classes in June. We thought a Mom & Me would be fun & we also enjoy giving fiber artists the opportunity to dye their own skeins of yarn. Our 3rd class will be a nice intro to natural fibers & needlefelting. It is definitely on the schedule - I just need to work up a few samples & take some pics so that sweet Nicole, the owner at Indigo, can post the information.

First rinse. All these colors plus sparkle on the same skein of sock yarn! I love playing with color & was particularly pleased at how clear the first round of rinse water was. That means I gauged the amount of dye I used just right so I haven’t wasted any dye & the dye struck properly in the steaming & won’t bleed. I’m planning on a jaunt to town on Friday so this will accompany me to . I’ve got a whole take-to-town pile that is growing daily.

We rewind every skein of yarn after it has been dyed, rinsed & dried. It isn’t really necessary to do that but we feel it gives a better idea of what the yarn will look like in your project. We also measure yardage as we do this rather than just “assume” the yardage based on the original weight of the skein. If you’ve ever been working on a project & played the old game of yarn chicken you know how a standard “440 yard skein” that is actually 414 yards can cause stress & possible disappointment. Plus, it is a rather mindless task to do at the end of the day when other chores are finished but it is too early to go to bed….
