While splitting firewood this morning we discovered an Appalachian cherry millipede. (I knew it was some sort of millipede but had to look it up.) It seems that, when threatened, they release a chemical that smells like cherries or almonds & is off-putting to potential predators. And since this was just a bit of leftover rotting wood we found the usual termite activity. You can see those little white lovelies in the picture as well. They have a place in nature.

This gal may look a little rough but she’s simply going through a normal fall molt. It is a time when her feathers will fall out & she will grow new ones in their place. Egg production stops as her body is working to build those new feathers. In about a month, small blue-gray shafts will begin to grow & they will produce new feathers. When a hen is at the stage where those pin feather shafts appear we are careful not to hold or touch them much as they are tender & sore. But at the end of the 2 to 3 month molt they will have beautiful new plumage & will be laying again.

Granddaughter Rivers rescued this frog from the bottom of the swimming pool. (She’s pretty good with that awkward long-handled pool net!). She gave it a good rinse in fresh water & moved it over to one of the little ponds in the backyard. It stayed with her for a bit before joining the other frogs in a better environment.

A male Eastern carpenter bee on the passiflora incarnata vine. Both are native to our area. After many years of trying to tame the passiflora we finally built a huge arched trellis for it & the pollinators cover it! This bee is waiting to warm up a bit more before getting to work for the day. I could tell it was a male because of the white patch on the face. Check out the shiny green eyes!

Just a few minutes before this old pot had been upright. I heard a quiet ticking sound when I walked by so investigated. I had a hunch it was some creature so decided to video since whatever it was didn’t sound like it was in a panic. Silly bird managed to flip the pot & get a bit of mud on itself but otherwise all was good.

I was walking up to turn off the hose after watering out back when this little cutie almost flew right into my face. It made a quick go-round & landed on the feeder. I was able to get a fast, not-great pic. I don’t mind these sorts of “risks” at all when I work outside!
