A small MacHaggis update.

We landed in England today and headed straight to visit our bottler before the bottles begin their journey across the Atlantic. Naturally, quality control was required.

I’m happy to report that a bottle was opened, poured, and thoroughly inspected by the highly trained professionals involved in this operation. Their verdict: it’s every bit as spectacular as it was when we first selected it.

Which is a tremendous relief, because once you’ve spent this much time talking about a whisky, it really ought to continue being excellent.

Meanwhile, MacHaggis himself arrived for an official photo shoot with the freshly labeled bottles. As you can see, he takes his role as mascot very seriously. Or at least as seriously as a shaggy stuffed Highland cow can.

Seeing the labels on the bottles, hearing that first tasting report, and knowing they’re nearly ready to ship makes all of this suddenly feel very real.

Our first independent, private bottling is no longer an idea. It’s sitting in bottles. And if all goes according to plan, we’ll be raising a glass with many of you before too long.

Slàinte!

P.S. MacHaggis would like everyone to know that he personally supervised the tasting. We have no evidence to support this claim, but we also have no evidence to refute it. 🍂🥃🐂

We’re excited to share that we’ve completed our first WhiskeySomms release.

This is a private bottling, not for sale, created through the full process of selecting and purchasing a single barrel in partnership with a whisky broker, followed by bottling under our own label. It marks an important milestone for us and reflects the level of care and intention we plan to bring to every release.

For those who know us, you know we have a company “spirit animal”, a Highland cow puppet named MacHaggis, who has been with us for nearly a decade (and yes, we’re fairly certain he needs a bath). It felt only right that he would make his way onto this inaugural bottle.

This is our first step into barrel selection and private bottling. It will not be the last, and it’s incredibly exciting to finally step into this space because it’s exactly what we’ve been working toward.

Oh, such a classic bottle!

We just adore this classic dram. Old worn leather shoe meets island malt. So yummy!

Another interesting dram on vacation. Nose: salted caramel, sultanas, orange peal and old wet cut hay. Taste: it needs time to breath. A drop of water improves the first taste. Mixed Nuts and spices are my first impressions. Initially the scent is better than the taste but I think this will improve as it breathes. :-)

Trying something new… a Drammer’s Whiskey Club single barrel pick. Smells like salted caramel and dark cherry cola. Also has a faint scent of ripened corn husks after shucking a fresh ear for dinner. 🙂 For a person who is not a big bourbon fan, this tastes really soft and lovely. Driest dark fruits, dark chocolate, and I want to say very old black licorice. Some hint of cinnamon and mint in the last notes. I wonder if it is a wheat forward mash bill.

Taking a rainy day to fill up the WhiskeySomms’ whisky library shelves. We started this project about 6 months ago - but it has always been our dream since buying our home.

This room was a book library so we had to take out the old shelves because they were too narrow and only 12 inches high (not high enough for many scotch bottles). For those wondering, the shelves are 20 inches deep, 14 inches high.

The shelves flanking the fireplace are mahogany and the new shelves on the right wall are pine. The green is from the Williamsburg Paint Collection. We are so glad we had the back lights installed or it would be terribly dark.

The duplicates are stored in our basement. We are sorting by distillery except for the open bottles. They are by type/region for trio tastings.

Honoring Elizabeth II and remembering 9/11. Peace be with you.

Tasting / tonight. We just received Gold Spot after a long anticipated wait! Great with a couple drops of water! Definitely tasting the sherry bracketed by port and wine notes. Very different from the others. Still love Green Spot. Nothing has taken its number one place.
