I learned from a friend to keep butterfly nets around if you own greenhouses. It's often a good opportunity to see them up close because they become really exhausted trying to get out of the strange plastic domes, and usually don't fly off immediately once we get them back out into the fresh air. These two both took off flying after a few moments of rest.

Lasagna gardening- we didn't have a chance to plant a cover crop in our outdoor beds, so we did some "lasagna" layers that will compost in place and should be mostly broken down by late spring/early summer. Rootballs stayed in, we added green material from around the land, old stems, a woodchip/chicken manure based compost we made here last spring, and some decomposing organic matter from around the land (mostly fall leaves, pine needles, branches, etc). When it warms up and day length becomes longer, the decomposers will wake up and have a feast. This gathering of materials from around the land had the same feeling as making a nourishing winter soup without a recipe; use what you have on hand, slow cook and it will bring wellness and one-of a kind flavors.

We grow four varieties of Echinacea here. Here is Echinacea paradoxa (the paradoxa being that it's the only yellow flowered Echinacea) and then Echinacea angustifolia and E. Pallida amongst the Clary sage, wood betony and Phacelia all blooming in their full glories.

Feed your pollinators. 🏵🐝🌻 I see the most diversity of bees on the lamb's ears (Stachys byzantina) which is interesting to me because the plant isn't very aromatic. The Bumble bees are also loving the Phacelia cover crop we grew for them.
