Black walnut season is OPEN at Black Squirrel Farms!

We are now accepting 2026 black walnuts from black walnut collection program members.

This year only, our Oak & Hickory Collection Pilot is also open. Black walnut collection program members are invited to collect acorns and hickory nuts for use as tree seed. The oak & hickory pilot works differently from the black walnut collection program. Collection is organized around individual source trees, so each tree must be registered before collecting. After a registered tree is reviewed, we'll provide pre-labeled mesh bags for delivering the collected nuts.

As far as we know, these are the first blue oyster mushrooms grown on a black walnut shell substrate ever in New York State! Our first harvest, which happened today, was a whopping 1.4 oz but big things start small. Imagine if we could eat black walnuts and also eat gourmet mushrooms grown on the black walnut shells! For those tracking our statistics, we should have a couple more ounces of mushrooms picked by Sunday, available for sale at our farm stand, first come / first served! Our summer farm stand hours are Wednesdays and Sundays, 11 am - 3 pm. Black walnuts will be available at our farm stand all summer.

The Black walnut Harvest Season has come to a close. 🖤🐿️🖤 Thank you to all of our members who were able to drop off even though 2024 proved to be a low yield year and had unpredictable drop periods.

End of Season Report:
Season duration:Sept 17-Nov 9
Raw walnuts collected: 24,785 lbs
Wet cleaned walnuts: 10,000 lbs
Cured/dried cleaned walnuts: 8,000 lbs
Probable recoverable nut meat: 1,000 lbs

The farm is officially closed to the public until Spring 2025. Thank you to everyone who supported us this Summer and Fall. We look forward to see you next year😊

The leaves are almost gone and the air is getting crisp that means we are approaching the end of our 2024 black walnut harvest season. The last day to drop off walnuts will be Saturday Nov. 9th. We ask that all nut rollers and burlap also be returned by that day.

Thank you to all of our members who have dropped off walnuts so far and we look forward to seeing you in the last 2 weeks of drop offs! End of season report will be released the following week!! 🍁🐿️

We are 1 month into the 2024 black walnut season and we have been busy hulling and curing walnuts.

So far we have received a little over 12,800 lbs of raw black walnuts and expect drop offs to keep coming in over the next couple of weeks. We will be announcing season close date next week! Happy gathering😊

Nut rollers ready and burlap bags stocked!! Black walnut season is here and we’re looking forward to seeing you soon!!👩‍🌾

We will be opening tomorrow, Sept. 11th for supplies pick up. Nut rollers and burlap bags can be picked up under our white carport. Nut rollers must be signed out.🌿

We will start accepting walnut drop offs on Sept. 17th. Drop off location is now next to our carport. Payout rate is $10 per 100lbs. Can’t wait for another great year of gathering!! 😊🐿️

Fall is right around the corner so that means we’re hiring for support during the 2024 harvest season!🍂

We are looking to fill 2 part time positions
-Black Walnut Harvest Support: a fully outdoor door with daily tasks consisting of walnut hulling, walnut drying, walnut storage, and other tasks associated with our outdoor processing.
-Operations Support: an indoor/outdoor job with daily tasks consisting of walnut cracking, walnut sorting, walnut packaging, and other tasks associated with our site and building.

Visit us on August 17th for Perennial Pancake Saturday at Black Squirrel Farms! In addition to our outdoor guided tours, come sample our take on pancakes!! 🥞

Our pancakes are made with 100% perennial plant-based ingredients (+ an egg, baking soda and salt) and feature products from the kinds of nuts we can grow in the Northeast. We’ll use chestnut flour, black walnut milk from our own black walnuts, hazelnut oil, and local maple syrup as a sweetener. 🌰🌱

Sign up for any Saturday 8/17 tour and we’ll add sampling perennial pancakes to the end of each. While everyone is welcome, this event is not a good fit for those with tree nut allergies. Tickets are $22 for adults and $15 for kids 12 and younger. Anyone under the age of 2 is free! We look forward to seeing you on Saturday 😊👩‍🌾
