Cross Brothers Whitetails STRIVING TO BREED, RAISE, AND PRODUCE BUCKS AND DOES THAT ARE NOT ONLY CLEAN TYPICALS BUT OF NORTHERN GENETICS WITH CWD RESISTANCE MARKERS

The country’s leading CWD genetics researcher just called CWD “by far the most corrupt area of scientific concern” he has ever experienced in his career. Dr. Christopher Seabury is a tenured professor at Texas A&M who has spent more than two decades studying prion diseases and has worked with USDA on genetic approaches to CWD. In a recent letter, Seabury pointed to Wisconsin as the real-world example nobody wants to talk about. Despite years of aggressive CWD management, including attempts to drastically reduce deer numbers, CWD continued to spread. Yet according to the Wisconsin population data he included, the state’s deer population increased by more than 82% from 2008 to 2024, reaching an estimated 1.825 million deer.

Seabury’s argument is that nature is already be doing what government management has failed to do. Selecting for deer that are more tolerant or resistant to CWD, allowing them to become infected but still survive and reproduce. He wrote that “mother nature has already done the experiment for us, and she won in the battle against CWD,” before saying the entire CWD field is the most corrupt area of science he has encountered and warning states to follow actual evidence instead of “ideological talking points.” That is one hell of a statement coming from a PHD researcher who has spent his career actually studying prion disease.

We have been blessed with a great healthy group of buck fawns this spring here from our three mature does.

W301 had twin buck fawns to start us off on May 23rd (G601 & G602)

W312 followed on June 2nd with twin buck fawns herself (G603 & G604)

W310 had a single extra large buck fawn to finish us out on June 15th (G605)

One of our doe fawns from last spring might possibly be carrying as well and will fawn late June early July. P502 might just be a year old herself but if a doe reaches around 80lbs by fall they will come into heat to get bred even before they reach a year old.

Finally our buck fawn from last year is slowly working on his first set of antlers. With the warmer weather coming he should start growing pretty fast now over the next 6-8 weeks. We are excited to see how he finishes come fall.

This is what happens when a “harmless” dog comes near our deer pens . I’ve said this dozens of times…..there is no such thing as a “harmless” strange dog around a deer pen.
A dog doesn’t have to chase deer to kill every deer in the pens. It just has to be near the pens so the deer see it.
If you are looking for an adult male walker bear hound wearing a green flat collar near Williamsburg WV, give me call. 304-661-1300. We need to talk.
I can’t catch the dog so I don’t know if the collar has the owners name and number or not. I’m sure it’s a bear hound that dug under the fence somewhere. It must be removed immediately, one way or another.
I’ve been extremely patient and have worked with hound hunters in the past who have had dogs enter my preserve fence.
But , my patience is wearing thin.
This was one of the most valuable buck fawns in my breeding program this year , out of a SS Canadian buck from over 20 years ago. No more semen is available from that deer.
The dog came near my pens , causing the deer to panic and smash into the fence , breaking the neck of this big beautiful buck fawn.
When I rushed out to get the dog it ran into the preserve like a feral coyote.
If I can successfully manage a 50 dog police dog kennel on our property without any issues with escaped dogs getting near my deer pens , then I certainly expect you to manage your dog to keep it off of my property and away from my pens.
If you can’t manage your dog , then I will have no choice but to manage it for you.

Fawning season 2026 has been good so far with two of our adult does delivering twin buck fawns each. We have one more adult doe that can drop any day and then two doe fawns that were exposed last fall. If they did get bred they will fawn out a month or so later. Time will tell what else shows but for the time being everyone is doing well and growing fast.

Fawn watch has started, these girls could start dropping any day. Today was pretty uneventful and they were content just lounging around in the fresh mowed pens while soaking up some sun. With the temperatures being pretty cool so far in May they might be stubborn and hold off for warmer days ahead.

First NADEFA conference in the books, it’s been an amazing couples days of talking with some of the best in the industry. Record numbers, great speakers, and big things are happening. Next on the agenda will be DC fly in coming up in April for meetings with legislator’s. Then it will be time to settle in for fawning season.
