🌱 Building a Better Future for Biosolids
Following the completion of UMJA’s wastewater treatment plant upgrade in 2019, it was time to focus on another essential part of the treatment process—biosolids management.

Planning for the Biosolids Upgrade Project began in 2023. Aging and undersized equipment needed to be replaced with a modern, reliable system capable of supporting our growing community well into the future.

The project includes:

New digesters
A new sludge thickener
A new centrifuge
A new biosolids dryer
Together, this equipment will improve how biosolids are processed, making the system more efficient, reliable, and sustainable.

Construction is now underway, with completion scheduled for January 2027. Once operational, the upgraded system will allow UMJA to continue producing high-quality fertilizer for local residents and farmers while transforming wastewater into a beneficial community resource.

💡 Fun Fact: Biosolids contain valuable nutrients, including nitrogen and phosphorus. When properly treated, they can be safely recycled as fertilizer—returning essential nutrients to the soil, supporting local agriculture, and reducing waste!

UMJA Solar Project Update! 🌱⚡

Exciting progress is being made on UMJA’s 1,600 kW solar project! Once operational, the system is expected to offset approximately 110% of UMJA’s annual energy usage, including our off-site pump stations. 💧

💰 What does this mean for UMJA?
⚡ Approx. $200,000 in reduced annual PPL energy costs
🌞 Approx. $52,000 in PA SREC income
💵 Estimated $71,000 in net savings in Year 1
📈 Projected $7.2 million in savings over 40 years

The project is another step toward reducing operating costs, supporting renewable energy, and investing in a more sustainable future for our community. 🌎💚

More than wastewater — working toward a cleaner, smarter future! ☀️💧♻️

If you’ve noticed some activity around the treatment plant recently, this is why! Crews have begun installing the support structures and completing site work for UMJA’s new ground-mounted solar array.

Once complete, the 1,600 kW system will include approximately 2,700 solar panels and will help offset a significant portion of the electricity used to operate our wastewater treatment facility.

Beyond producing renewable energy, this project is an investment in UMJA’s long-term future. The solar array is projected to provide substantial energy savings over its lifetime, helping reduce operating costs while supporting our continued commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible use of ratepayer dollars.

There’s still plenty of work ahead, but it’s exciting to see this project beginning to take shape. We’ll continue sharing updates as construction progresses!

LIGHTS OUT, UPPER PERK VALLEY!
Did you know that millions of migratory birds pass through our region each year? During migration, artificial light can confuse and disorient birds, putting them at risk.
From August 15 through November 15, we’re asking our community to help give migrating birds a safer journey.
LIGHTS OUT: Turn off non-essential outdoor lights
SHIELD & CLOSE: Close blinds and curtains to reduce light escaping from buildings
USE LIGHTS WISELY: Use timers and motion sensors when lighting is needed
SUPPORT BIRDTOWN: Help make our community a safer stopover for migrating birds
🕚 11:00 PM – 6:00 AM
📅 August 15 – November 15
A special shout-out to Green Lane Park and our local Birdtown community for helping raise awareness and protect the birds that pass through the Upper Perkiomen Valley.
Together, we can make the Upper Perkiomen Valley a safer place for birds while keeping our community beautiful.
Lights out. Birds up. Let’s help them find their way.

A Reel Great Week at Fishing Camp!
This week, Upper Montgomery Joint Authority - UMJA’s Operations Manager, Jason DiPietro, had the opportunity to volunteer at the Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy’s Fishing Camp, sharing his love of fishing with the next generation of anglers!
From showing campers some of his favorite fishing hot spots at Green Lane Park teaching them how to choose the right tackle and lures for the job, Jason enjoyed spending time answering questions, sharing tips, and helping the kids build confidence on the water.

To cap off an incredible week, Jason donated a special fishing lure to the camper who landed the biggest bass of the week. Congratulations to Charlie, our big winner! We hope that lure helps you catch many more trophy fish!

A heartfelt thank you to the amazing staff at the Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy for inviting us to be part of such a fantastic program. Your commitment to connecting kids with nature and inspiring future conservationists is truly appreciated.
At Upper Montgomery Joint Authority, we're proud to support opportunities that encourage outdoor recreation, environmental stewardship, and strong community partnerships.
Here's to many more casts, catches, and unforgettable memories!

💧 Water is one of our most valuable resources, and protecting it is our mission. 💙

During , Upper Montgomery Joint Authority is proud to recognize the dedicated professionals who work every day to treat wastewater safely and responsibly, helping protect public health and the environment.
Our wastewater treatment team operates and maintains critical infrastructure, monitors treatment processes, performs laboratory testing, and ensures that treated water returned to our local waterways meets strict environmental standards.
Water quality is a shared responsibility. By keeping wipes, grease, fats, oils, and other non-flushable items out of the sewer system, our community can help prevent blockages, protect our treatment process, and preserve our water resources for future generations.
This month, we celebrate the commitment, expertise, and hard work of our operators, maintenance staff, laboratory personnel, and support team. Thank you for making a difference every day and helping keep our water clean!
Together, we're protecting our community—one drop at a time. 💧
