Blue Hill, Maine, will be the dance center of the universe on Saturday, March 14. You don’t wanna miss it!
Pull those dancing shoes out of the snowbank and come boogie….cut loose with the Loose Cannon Jug Band, an eight-piece group with harmonica, horns, fiddles, bass, drums, guitars, mandolin, multi-vocalists, plus occasional kazoo and tomato can. Family-friendly. Donations at the door to benefit one of our members’ purchase of a standup wheelchair. How long has it been since you heard a live rockin tuba?!❤️🎼💃🕺. .

End of harvest, and a challenging harvest it’s been. Lower than average yield and (we love our new harvester, but…) several equipment break-downs. The weeks of drought and heat have also led to a quick end. Today, we have driven 2 hours Downeast to harvest at a friend’s organic field. Sometimes a farmer just can’t call it quits, especially with a great crew, who have helped us fill every fresh-pack order this season, even when the situation seemed impossible!! Today’s harvest will be frozen for year-round orders. Whew!

Celebrating June 14 with solar power! The team is installing panels! A USDA-REAP grant is approved and funding half the cost of panels for our new facility. Thank you US taxpayers and sound fiscal management by our federal lawmakers for making domestic sustainable energy options possible. We will be turning sunshine into electricity to process and store fresh and frozen organic Maine wild blueberries. ☀️➕♥️🟰🫐.

A year ago, this field was de-rocked and wood chip mulch spread (see the before and after pics)….and here it is today, with a pretty nice set of blooms on the regrowth. Although we lose yields in fields for several years after the heavy machinery and disturbance, the timing of the work last spring, the skill of the contractors and the health of this field has it looking this good! The mulch helps mitigate soil moisture and temperature, reduces some disease pressure and in the end improves health for the soil biome. The future of this field looks good 🫐❤️.

Honeybees are essential workers for Maine’s wild blueberry crop—I placed hives on all of our producing fields this morning, meeting a truck from Swan’s Honey at 3:30 am. This cold wet weather isn’t great for honeybees, but we also have bumblebees on our fields, all joining the native pollinators, eager to live their best lives, which results in our best fruit!

We’re starting to see this year’s fruit! Every one of those little flower buds could swell, open up, be visited by numerous pollinators and then develop into a single berry, if all goes well. Which one do you want?!

Join me and many other farmers tomorrow in Augusta…Maine’s state capitol…we will be driving a tractor brigade and hosting a day of action to elevate the stories of how farmers are being impacted by executive branch cuts to congressionally approved funding and raise public awareness about how deep into our society these cuts will affect human lives and livelihoods.

Spring mowing of our fields…can be a dance between weather systems. And this Spring has already come and gone again several times over! For various reasons, we are not burning any fields this spring, so I am solo on the tractor with the flail mower for many many hours and acres. The work of starting a new production cycle is both rewarding and melancholic—we break bonds with plants that bore so well, reflect on their awesome strength and beauty, and cast a wide net of hope for the resilience of new growth to come. This is farming the wild plants. This is what next year’s crop looks like today. 🫐♥️.

We’re so excited to have FarmDrop using our facility!! As this building was intended to serve a multi-business function in Maine’s local food system (per the AIIP funding), we are really happy to have it be utilized during our 10 month “off-season” as a central hub for aggregating and packing farm products from all over the state. Super stoked for this !!!!
