❤️💚💛🖤 06.14.2026

In celebration and honor of Juneteenth, the talented dancers of Soulful Movement Inc. presented creek.dance at the headwaters of Carpenter Creek, honoring historian and storyteller Ora Wills, the legacy of Jennie Hudgins, and the vibrant Black community that once gathered at the legendary Jennie’s Swimming Hole. 🌿✨

Jennie Hudgins, born in 1865, owned land along Carpenter Creek and established what became known as Aunt Jennie’s Swimming Hole—a cherished gathering place where families swam, fished, celebrated, and were baptized in the waters near New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. 💙🌊

Today, Angela Kyle, Jennie’s great-great-granddaughter, carries that legacy forward as the founder of Jennie’s Legacy, an organization dedicated to preserving the cultural and environmental history of Carpenter Creek and the stories of the families who called it home. 🌱

Thank you to everyone working to ensure these important stories continue to be shared for generations to come. ❤️💚💛🖤

06.11.1026 🌿✨ We were honored to welcome Angela Kyle to From The Ground Up Community Garden last week.

Angela works in sustainability, urban strategy and community design and is the founder of Jennie’s Legacy, an initiative dedicated to preserving the rich cultural and environmental history of Carpenter Creek and the specifically the black communities that have called it home. 💙🌊

She is also the daughter of educator, and author, Ora Wills, whose work has helped preserve the stories, people, and heritage connected to this important Pensacola waterway. 📚✨

Angela shared her educational and career journey and family’s story with our interns, including the legacy of her great-great-grandmother, Jennie Hudgins, whose connection to Carpenter Creek inspired the creation of Jennie’s Legacy. Her message was a powerful reminder that history, community, and the environment are deeply connected. 🌱🤝

Thank you, Angela, for inspiring the next generation to honor the past while helping shape a brighter future.

06.14.206 ~ At the Headwaters of Carpenters Creek Angela recited one her mother’s poems called Absolution just after we watched the amazing Soulful Movement Dancers perform “creek.dance”. - see next post. Happy Juneteenth

Angela will be the next speaker at Green Drinks Pensacola in July at End of the Line Cafe. Stay tuned.
💚 PS. I also got to see some former students (so proud of them and educators) ❤️🖤💚💛🖤

🌿🍽️ Lunch & Learn 🌊🐢
Hats off—or should we say, Tuttle Hats ON—to Bethanne Edwards, Director of Sustainability for Innisfree Hotels!
On Tuesday, 06.16.2026, Innisfree’s Sustainability Program celebrated employees at the Hilton Pensacola Beach with an incredible Lunch & Learn event. As part of Hilton, Pensacola Beach’s ongoing commitment to recognizing and celebrating employees each month, this special gathering brought team members together for an engaging and educational experience. What began as a conversation between Leah and Bethanne, and a nudge from Bailey Walkinshaw, Community Science Coordinator with the Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary Program (PPEP), grew into a fantastic collaboration.
Nearly 100 people attended, including Hilton employees, garden, sustainability and HR interns, and community friends.
Bailey shared PPEP’s mission and encouraged everyone to keep an eye out for manatees, especially during the summer months. If you spot one, snap a photo or video and report it to PPEP! She also hosted three giveaways packed with great goodies. 🐋📸
Bethanne then took the floor to share Innisfree’s Dune Defenders program, inviting attendees to become environmental educators. Best of all, everyone took the pledge! 🌾💚
On a personal note, as someone with a B.S. in Zoology and an M.Ed. in Education, this entire experience felt like a dream come true. It was educational, impactful, and so much fun. YEAH! I can’t wait for the next one.
And the best surprise? Special appearances by Trashy the Bag Monster and Tilly the Turtle! 🗑️🐢
Hmm… I think they should start showing up every week. 🙄😂
