Today is the 110th birthday of the National Park Service!
Big jerk was born from a longing for an experience once had at the border of a national park. From huckleberry mules shared with strangers who became friends in a moment. Born from a desire to live interestingly and creatively. A desire to do something a little bold.
In 2016 we lived in a van and attempted a massive roadtrip to every NPS site for the Parks Centennial. We followed some new van life pals to Polebridge, a little pit stop of a town on the western edge of Glacier NP. We spent a glorious month there: hiking, swimming, working at a saloon, finding a different kind of community, one that was often formed in the after hours of that century-old cabin turned public house.
Our trip was cut short and we came home to Pensacola. We began to make our own ginger beer, an attempt to keep the spirit of our trip alive. Our friends liked it, a few businesses dared to leap with us and sell our product, so Big Jerk was officially born in 2018, and we’ve been on this wild ride since.
Some days it’s hard to remember what urged us onto the road, chasing brown road signs to our next adventure. And then other days, like today, we make ginger beer together, now with our son, and that fire within flickers again. To be bold and creative. To do something interesting every day.
Maybe one day we will get back in the van again and check off some more park sites. But for now, Big Jerk ignites our creative spirit. Hope this batch of Ginger Beer tastes as special to y’all as it felt to make it today.
