I posted something about grass-fed pork a couple of weeks back, and an old trusted friend challenged it. Rightfully so, as grass-fed pork doesn't exist. Pigs are omnivores which means that they eat both plants and animals; they need more than grass to survive. Our pigs are also fed: Purina all in one, alfalfa, zucchini, melon, citrus, bananas, apples, raw cows milk, boiled eggs, corn on the cob, spinach, lettuce, green beans, carrots, peas, celery, and the list goes on….🍓🍒🍍🍋🥥🥜🍇🍉🥝🥦🥗🥒🥕🌽🍏🍅🥬🍈🥙🍐🫐
We rotationally graze, which offers richer soils, helps limit erosion, helps to limit required grain feeding for livestock, and rebalances nutrition for the animals. The pigs stir up the soil, eat what they can, and move, leaving richer grass behind them in just a couple of months. The 🐄 and 🐐 eat the grass and brush (and milk and grain as needed, etc.), one day providing milk for the other animals, and fertilizing the soil behind them. The 🐓 aerate the soil, eat weeds, and pick through the manure left behind from the other animals, scratching for and controlling insects as they go. The 🦆 and 🦃 control pests that otherwise would eat the garden up, which is used to sustain both the humans and the animals. Plus, the manure they leave behind is rich and beneficial for the garden in a unique way. Each play a part for the farmer- and each depends on the farmer for clean bedding and food supplements (on our farm as we start to rejuvenate especially). We love learning and playing and growing with all of them!
