Our Story
Fortune Smiles Farmstead, is located in the quaint town of Perham, approximately 9 miles NW of Caribou, Maine in the, "County" of Aroostook. We are sometimes referred to as the ,"Crown of Maine", and that we are, as after us, ones next stop is our closest neighbor Canada. We are also aptly described as being very far, "North of Ordinary". Another very true statement; as we just may be the last place in the northeast that retains this level of wildness and unspoiled beauty. Nothing here is ordinary, not our landscape, weather, people, location, traditions, work ethic and certainly not our ability to carve out our own way of life and march to our own drum. We like to believe we farm right smack dab in the middle of the,"Land of Opportunity." Our farm consists of 167 acres, 95 or so acres in naturally improved pasture for rotational grazing, with the balance being in hay fields and managed woodlot and maple grove along with our homestead, barn and outbuildings, berry bushes and fruit trees. We pasture raise our livestock without antibiotics, hormones or other nasty items, that healthy, hardy stock raised on an open pasture system of naturally managed grasses just do not need. Our livestock get plenty of fresh air, minerals, fine grasses and legumes, plenty of space to stretch their legs and behave in the manner that nature intended them to. We keep closed folds, herds, flocks as this reduces our risk of disease and that is important to us. Although it does increase our workload as we must maintain separate pastures for our breeding stock. As we do not use artificial insemination techniques, we also have to manage bulls, boars and rams. Really not all too difficult as we have chosen more docile primitive breeds and won't breed ornery critters. We believe the extra efforts are worth it. We allow our nursing stock to stay with their mothers and get all the benefits of mothers milk, (not processed formula) for increased growth and livestock happiness. When it is time for processing, our livestock enjoy all the pumpkins and apples they desire, which we and our customers feel enhances the rich flavor, texture and juiciness of our meats. We process 7 miles from our farm with another family business owner, who pays attention to our animals comfort and the needs and wants of our customers. There is a saying at our farm that," every day at the farm is a good day except the last day." We strive to raise our livestock with the respect and dignity they deserve and we believe it shows in the quality of the products we produce. We encourage questions and visitors, just call ahead and we will work to accommodate your visit. They say if you love what you do you never work a day in your life. A very true sentiment but I would also add if you truly believe in what you do, you will go the extra mile because you know it is the right thing to do and the benefits are immeasurable. This year we are ramping up our vegetable and berry production, using a hoop house and seeing how this will fit into our long term farm goals. Our hope is to become a local regional farm destination, one that our customers can put their confidence in. Our farm family cares about what our customers are feeding themselves, their family and friends. So...stop on by and meet your meat and get to know your farmer.
