There's a first time for everything. Today I suffered my first (TWO!) snakebites. It was a rat snake, so obviously non-venomous, but their tiny little teeth are sharp! I have circled the bites on my hands so you can see the "extensive" damage done. đŸ¤Ŗ The first bite happened when I went to do a normal grab, the second was when I thought I had it close enough to it's head...obviously not.

I've been waiting (it has literally been in my calendar) for the day I look in this nest and see babies! I absolutely LOVE Carolina Wrens and am always glad when they choose to make nests close to us. This hanging basket is on my garden fence. There are at least 5 chicks in there right now.

Fun fact: Carolina wrens often snag a piece of snake skin shed to put in their nest. This mama has a lovely part of a plain-bellied water snake shed as a lining. The snake was also (probably) laying eggs in my garden since D had a heck of a time evicting her so he could till. Her shed was in my garden a few days later, and the wren made quick work of it.

This is why I'm not usually encouraged to go to Tractor Supply in the spring. We needed some new hens. Then we were getting gas and managed to potentially get rid of some of our silkie roos. The couple in the car next to us had also just bought chicks and were bummed that there were no roos for sale. 😅

I think he was embarrassed to be caught wearing a Guinea feather on his head. Normally he follows me pretty closely, but today he wouldn't let me get a close-up.

This poor lady (one of our resident honey bees) must have gotten too tired today. She hung out with me for almost 15 minutes. I gave her sugar water and walked her back to her hive, and she still wouldn't let go. We came back in the house for another round of sugar water. Finally, she flew off back towards the hive.
