This is a good video example of a permaculture layout.
Permaculture in a nutshell: 2 birds 1 stone. Everything has a dual purpose and a lot of that purpose has to do with building your health, your community's health, and soil health. Healthy soil has more nutrients for your plants and stores more water so less manual irrigation is required.
Chickens = pest control, compost, and eggs. Woodchips = soil building mulch turned compost, w**d suppression, animal bedding, and a free resource from local tree companies vs spending hundreds of dollars on bagged stuff from the stores (cuts down on plastic waste, too)
Fruit trees = food, shade, local bird habitat, local Birds = more pest control for free
Rain catch systems = systematic irrigation and water for your animals
Herbs = both culinary and medicinal use, also flowering for pollinators
Edible perennials = the food that keeps on giving year after year, fulfilling different roles in a guild system such as ground cover, nitrogen fixers, dynamic accumulators, living mulch, etc.
All of this and more while supporting biodiversity and wildlife ecosystems in your yard! Add native flowering perennials that host beneficial insects and pollinators, and you've also made it look more landscaped and pleasing to the eye. Planting different things intentionally can take advantage of different microclimates and needs in your yard (wetter vs drier spots, warmer vs cooler spots, sunny vs shady spots, wind breaks, privacy screens, etc). Lastly, having everything laid out in the most efficient use of space, how each system works with the next, and tailored to your travel patterns throughout your yard.
