In today's reel, I'm sharing a little glimpse of where we grow our tomatoes. Pardon the rambling here, lets blame it on the heat! 🥵

Growing healthy tomatoes is a lot more than planting a seed and hoping for the best! This week its a big harvest, hard prune, and some overdue spraying!

Like every growing season, we've had a few bumps in the road. You may notice a little lull in tomato availability next week as we give our larger plants a chance to recover and fill back up with beautiful fruit. We're excited for what the rest of the season has in store!

You can also trust these have never been sprayed! However, the caterpillars are starting to thrive so I am doing a hard prune and harvest and give them a little neem oil to try and control the pests before another round of fruits are ready to harvest!

🍅 **Vacation for some of us... but not for the tomatoes!** ☀️

While Easton and I are away enjoying a little time off with friends, the tomatoes just keep on coming!

Thankfully, I have an incredible crew back home. ❤️ My mom and sister spent the morning picking and stocking the cooler with **LOTS of beautiful, fresh tomatoes**, and they did an amazing job!

After weeks of watching the skies (and moving water lines around around!), we're thankful to hear the sound of raindrops today. Our tomatoes, flowers, and especially those mums we recently planted are soaking it all in.

Sure, we know a rainy weekend isn't exactly what everyone hopes for when they're planning a trip to the lake. But the forecast looks encouraging—after some showers, the weather should gradually improve before turning hot and sunny again. Hopefully everyone still gets a chance to enjoy a little time at Mark Twain Lake this weekend! 🌦️➡️☀️

🍅 Not every tomato is picture perfect... and there's usually a reason why!

Before we moved here, my tomato patch consisted of 15–20 plants. If a tomato had a split or a green shoulder, I didn't give it much thought—I simply sliced around it and enjoyed it.

Fast forward to a few hundred tomato plants later... I still don't lose much sleep over these little imperfections, but I am fascinated by what causes them and how we can improve. (Once a science teacher, always a science teacher. Summer break just means my experiments happen in the garden instead of the classroom! 😉)

One thing you've probably noticed is split tomatoes.

These splits are usually caused by inconsistent watering and fluctuating temperatures. In the case of these tomatoes... I'm pretty confident it's the watering. 🙋‍♀️

Let's just say someone has forgotten to shut the irrigation off a few times over the last few weeks. 😅

When tomatoes suddenly receive a large amount of water, the inside of the fruit expands faster than the skin can stretch. Add a hot, sunny afternoon, and pop!—you've got a split tomato.

I've tried phone reminders. I've tried watch alarms. I've even tried rubber bands and other little tricks to remind myself to shut the water off.

Honestly... harvesting split tomatoes might be the reminder that finally sticks. 😂

The good news? Split tomatoes taste every bit as delicious as perfect-looking ones. They just don't store as long and they're much more likely to attract flies, ants, and other garden visitors, so we try to harvest and enjoy them quickly.

Another little garden lesson this season has been green shoulders—those tomatoes that stay green around the stem even when the rest of the fruit is ripe.

From everything I've learned, that's often a sign the plants could use a little more potassium. So we're making a few fertilizer adjustments and seeing if we can encourage more evenly ripened fruit over the next few weeks.

Gardening is always a learning process, and Mother Nature loves to keep us humble!

🍅 **Let's talk about the less glamorous side of growing tomatoes...**

I recently saw another grower post a picture of something they called **"tomato tar."** I'd never heard the term before, but I immediately knew exactly what they meant!

It's that black, sticky residue that coats your fingers after pruning tomato plants or reaching deep into the vines to harvest. It's stubborn stuff—soap and water barely touch it. It stains clothes, loves to hide under fingernails, and somehow always finds every little wrinkle on my hands.

So, if you've noticed my less-than-perfect manicure in photos of beautiful, freshly picked tomatoes... now you know why! 😄

It's a small reminder that every tomato in our stand has been planted, tied, pruned, picked, and packed by hand. The dirt under the nails, the tomato tar, and the occasional sunburn are all part of growing the fresh, flavorful tomatoes we look forward to every summer—and honestly, they're worth it.

🍅🌞 Meet the one of the stars of the tomato patch... Mr. Stripey! 🌞🍅

If you've never tried a Mr. Stripey heirloom tomato, you're in for a treat!

These gorgeous tomatoes are known for their stunning yellow and red marbled flesh, sweet flavor, and low acidity. They're a favorite among heirloom lovers because they're as beautiful on the inside as they are on the outside.
