Polar Treat The best ice cream and specialty treats you can find in Down East Maine, along with a full food menu that includes fresh seafood! We are CASH ONLY.

We are a take out with outdoor seating, operating daily from April through October. The Polar Treat is a Down East icon, also known as the Dairy Joy or the A-Frame. A stopping place for locals and tourists, the establishment has been here 75 years! 2024 marks the 75th Anniversary of Polar Treat, Perry, Maine! John & Mary MacDonald began the business and kept it running for 50 years, sold it to Jack and Bernadette Maloney in 2001, and only the third owners - Michelle and Judson Curtis - have owned and operated the establishment since 2019. The Polar Treat offers soft serve chocolate, vanilla, twist, and a special flavor of the week, a variety of hard serve flavors, shakes, flurries, sundaes, floats, dips, and so much more! The Polar Treat also sells food, expanding its menu each year. In 2024, we added a huge selection of the freshest seafood you can get Down East, cooked to perfection! Other food items include burgers, hot dogs, fries, onion rings, chicken, and many appetizer options. Check our page for our weekly specials in addition to our regular menu. Call in orders are always welcome! We have added a screened in, indoor eating area and have several picnic tables are available for outdoor seating, shaded with umbrellas. Feel free to bring a blanket to enjoy your treats on, too! Hours adjust each year and the business operates from April to October or November, depending on weather, closed annually during the Maine winter. We’re all cleaned up and ready to close for the winter, but there’s one thing missing from this picture… 👀

THE SOFT SERVE MACHINES! 🍦

We pulled them out to make room for something BIGGER and BETTER. Our brand-new machines are being manufactured this winter and will be shipped to us at the end of March, just in time to get ready for the 2027 season!

And when we say brand-new, we mean we invested in the top of the line soft serve machines. We’re talking high-volume production, digital controls, and maximum cooling power. Why? Because we need them! 😂🤪

Every year, the volume grows, and soft serve continues to be the backbone of the Polar Treat. You keep showing up, you keep supporting us, and you keep us BUSY! Thanks to your support throughout the 2026 season, we were able to make another major investment in the future of this iconic A-frame.

From renovations and a new eating area to pavement improvements and now brand-new soft serve machines, we’re continuing to reinvest in this business and the community that makes it all possible. Every dollar you spend here helps us keep improving, growing, and making sure the Polar Treat keeps on trucking for years to come and Perry, Maine is on the map!

Now, it’s time to hibernate for a little while… but we’ll be counting down the days until next season!🍦 See you in 2027!

From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU for another incredible year at the Polar Treat. Thank you for every visit, every meal, every ice cream treat, every kind word, and every bit of support you’ve shown our little business.

You showed up BIG (bigger than ever!) this season, and we are so incredibly grateful. Our community is something special, and we couldn’t do this without YOU or the best super scooping team around!

Now it’s time for our absolutely amazing team to rest, recharge, and get ready for another year of memories, good food, and your favorite treats.

Well, friends… the kitchen is officially CLOSED! We sold out of EVERY food item! 🤯 THANK YOU for showing up and showing your support - we are so grateful! ❤️

Now, let’s talk ice cream! We’ll be serving until we sell out, and based on yesterday, that could be sooner than you think!

We have just 5 gallons of vanilla, 5 gallons of chocolate, and 5 gallons of peanut butter soft serve left. Sounds like a lot, right? Yesterday, we went through 25 GALLONS of soft serve! 😳

We expect today’s supply to last only through the first half of the day, so get here EARLY! We anticipate closing sometime late this afternoon.

The 2pm Saturday update:

We’ve got one more hour for the kitchen! We have fries and regular poutines available, two orders of mozzarella planks, two orders of fried green beans, and some gluten free chicken nuggets to sell! Come get them before the fryers shut off for the final time of 2026!

Ice cream remains open until 7pm and tomorrow from 11am until we sell out!

🍔 FOOD UPDATE:

Food has sold out much faster than we anticipated, so we expect to have food available only for the first half of the day today, until we sell out! Here’s what we have left:

🔹 About 20 burgers 🍔
🔹 Fries and limited onion rings
🔹 Limited chicken tenders
🔹 Limited chicken burgers
🔹 A few orders of mozzarella sticks and mozzarella planks
🔹 ONE order of fried mushrooms
🔹 About 4 lobster rolls! 🦞

THAT’S IT! We have officially sold out of every other food item in the A frame! 🤯

🚨 CAPTAIN’S PLATTER UPDATE! 🚨

We sold out in FIVE HOURS yesterday. Yes, FIVE. Over 30 Captain’s Platters. P**f. Gone! 🤯

But don’t worry… we have a small restock today! Here’s the seafood situation:
🐟 Haddock is running low and is expected to sell out today.
🦪 Two more gallons of scallops arrive this morning. 🐚 Two more gallons of clams arrive early this afternoon.

We’ll keep serving Captain’s Platters until we run out of one of the seafood options. Then, we’ll switch to a trio seafood plate, followed by a two-seafood meal as supplies get lower. Once it’s gone, it’s gone!

⚠️ Seafood will be very limited by tomorrow, so don’t wait if you have your heart set on one last seafood feast!

The good news? We still have plenty of burgers, chicken, and other favorites for your last Polar Treat meal of the season! 🍔🍗

🍦 And the ice cream? We’re stocked for the ENTIRE WEEKEND! Flurries, milkshakes, sundaes, and cones are ready to go. Grab your favorite pints for the freezer, too. You’ll thank yourself when the winter cravings hit! 😉

🦞 THE CAPTAIN’S PLATTER IS BACK FOR THE FINAL DAYS! 🦞

It’s the last few days of our 2026 season, and we’re going out with a fan favorite — The Captain’s Platter! ⚓️ Piled high with:
Shrimp, Scallops, Haddock, Whole belly clams, Fries, Coleslaw, Bread…and all your favorite sauces!

$50 + tax
Want onion rings instead of fries? $53 + tax

🦞 Add a fresh lobster roll for just $15! Yep. Lobster roll + Captain’s Platter. You’re welcome ☺️

A little heads up: We have about 35 pounds of haddock left. That might sound like a lot, but even this late in the season we can easily go through 15–20 pounds a day. So yes… we WILL run out!

Once the haddock is gone, we’ll switch to a Pick Two Seafood Basket until we sell out.

Not feeling the seafood? We’ve got wing platters for the land lubbers. 18 wings, fries, any appetizer, and Mac and cheese or slaw! $32 plus tax, sub onion rings for $35

We have most of our regular food menu available right now, but as we head into these final few days, items will begin disappearing as we run out.

Friends, we ran out of BOTH maple and strawberry soft serve yesterday! 🍓🍁

Yes, we could have made more for one day, but it just didn’t make sense this late in the season. So… it’s peanut butter time (twisted with vanilla, chocolate available by stacking them)! 🥜🍦

Peanut butter soft serve will be available through closing on Sunday. If you missed the maple or strawberry, don’t worry — we have a limited number of pints of each available. Just ask us!

🔹Crackle cups limited so get yours soon!

Since it’s our last week, we won’t be running a full special menu. BUT, we do have a few limited-time favorites available for the next couple of days, while supplies last:

It may be the end of the season, but we are thinking ahead to 2027 already 👀

We’ve got about a dozen of the “crackle cups” for you to try out: frozen chocolate with any shake you’d like (although we determined Oreo is the best for these in our opinion 👌) and whipped cream - you squeeze the cup to get giant chocolate pieces in your shake! We just want your opinion: yay, nay, or meh. Try one and tell us if this should make the menu next year! 🙌🏼 $5 each while we try em out!
