10 years ago my progeny was about to enter the hallowed gates of formal education… I was so excited for her! She was so excited for herself- I waited until the gates closed behind her to burst into a puddle of Mom tears. That day? 10 years ago? Was the most hours I had ever spent away from her in her short life.

Fast forward to this morning and 6:00 am breakfast chatter. She cannot believe she has under 30 weeks to High School, and 5 years from today? She will be walking through a new set of gates and I will again be fighting back hysterical tears. She will walk into University. She will walk into her very own life that day. She will be a new adult. She will be, at the end of that day—

On her own. To find her dinner. To handle her homework. To manage her social life. To manage her everything. I won’t be waiting at the gate, every afternoon, as I will have done for 15 years.

To all the parents out there- we are so fortunate. We were brave. America makes being parents the hardest most dangerous and also the most rewarding life move we ever undertook.

My only regret is how time is moving so much faster now. I wish minutes were days, and days were weeks. I really do. We all do.

Wishing everyone’s kids the best school year yet. Get it, Littles!!!

When you’re a cool 13 and your Mom makes you go on an educational Garden Club field trip to learn even more about gardens. 🤣🫶🏻✨

You guys. This is the best. For every day I suffered at Disney or Universal or on some endless glass boat ride at .2 mi an hour with a toddler saying “GATOR! GATOR!” And not to mention the Gypsy Vanner horse tours or Chincoteague pony adventures-

I now take her to every special interest adventure of MINE. Ha!

“It’s a plant, Mom.”

“OK, it’s a pre Civil War rare plant from the same climate zone on the other side of the planet, it speaks to human ingenuity, and human historical behaviors. Ok. Can we go to the mall?”

🤣💜

Really loving the plants (senna alata) that we grew from seed. I was gifted the seeds by a fellow garden club member from her plant. These are perennials here in , they get 6 to 8 feet tall the first year and can get up to 14 feet tall after that so blend them somewhere you want height. Our are south facing, handle Gulf winds without a problem and are 6-8 feet here. Year 1.

Love them with the climbing . Gorgeous combo, they have very different textures and are visible even from the mailbox 4 acres away.

We needed some big, eye catching plants for along the front porch. These are absolutely perfect!

This is why we let the end of summer plants grow wild in the food gardens and go to seed!

This is a Black Swallowtail caterpillar (Papilio polyxenes), often referred to as a “parsley worm.”

Appearance: Smooth green or whitish-green body with black transverse bands interrupted by yellow-to-orange spots.

Host Plant: It is resting on a member of the Apiaceae (carrot) family—this is fennel, but it also likes dill, or parsley—which is their preferred food source.

Defense Mechanism: If poked or threatened, it pops out a bright orange, Y-shaped scent organ from behind its head called an osmeterium, which emits a pungent odor to deter predators.

Distinction from Monarchs:
While similar at a quick glance, Monarch caterpillars (Danaus plexippus) feed strictly on milkweed (Asclepias) and feature continuous, solid black, yellow, and white bands without yellow spots, as well as distinct black fleshy filaments (tentacles) on both ends of their bodies.

One of the most important aspects of a food garden is pollinator activity. Although it might look a mess out in my food gardens right now because it is unkempt and wild—

Without this 90 days of “mess” we don’t cultivate pollinators.

Do it for them! And you. Let them LIVE! 💜

Good morning, World. Lovely butterflies to make our morning more beautiful. Be gentle today. Be grateful to be alive today. ✨💜

Cat D’Lorange Buuton the barn cat is not having these baby deer come eat the food gardens.

This is his version of “Not today, Satan!” 🤣🐈

And yes. Wild animals actually and literally just walk around all day, and all night here. We have baby foxes scampering around, poulets everywhere, tortoises marching (they’re actually fast!), and the usuals. Raccoons, , coyotes, wild boar, black bears, Florida Panthers, Eagles, Hawks, and gators. We prefer the gators not show themselves. It’s enough that we know they are lurking. 🤣🤷🏻‍♀️

Our little barn cats face down all those critters. It’s amazing what felines can do, and how the other animals do respect them.

We rescued them as kittens. And now they rescue us.

Oldie but goodie. Trying to sort and curate the 2003-2006 era Sony Mobile Phone Camera sessions. So much here. So many people who left the party too soon. Those were great years. Ok, 2,789 images to go…. 🤣🤞
