Renee had her very first calf, and I’d say she’s taken to being a mama just fine. ❤️

There’s always a little extra worry with a first-time mama, so seeing her standing there taking care of that baby is a pretty good feeling. Cleaned him up and he nursed in about 20 minutes.

Healthy calf, good mama, and another blessing in the pasture.

Thank you, God. We don’t take these moments for granted. 🙏🐮❤️

Buying Your First Mini Hereford

Thinking about adding your first Miniature Hereford? Don’t let “mini” be the only thing you look for.

A few things we’d pay attention to:

• Structure — Good feet, legs and overall soundness matter at any size.
• Disposition — Especially important for small farms and first-time cattle owners.
• Body & condition — Look for a well-balanced animal with good depth and capacity.
• Genetics — Ask about registration, parentage and any genetic testing that’s been done. DNA needs to be mandatory.
• Health history — Vaccinations, herd health and general management are worth asking about.
• The breeder — Find somebody willing to answer your questions before AND after the sale. A lot of people will just sell you a calf but make sure you deal with someone that is honest, trustworthy and breeding good genetics.

A good Miniature Hereford should still be a functional, well-made Hereford—just on a smaller frame.

Buy the animal and the genetics, not just the tape measure. 🌾🐮

Y’all have a great week!

Pasture & Prayer 🌾🙏

Life gets a little quieter in the pasture… and sometimes that’s where God speaks to me the loudest. The sounds and thoughts of a busy day fade away and your mind can become clear. You can hear the crunching of grass as cows graze. The birds fly by. The creek water running over the hill. All of his creation.

Lord, quiet our hearts, steady our minds, and help us trust You with the things we can’t control. Thank You for today, for the blessings around us, and for always walking beside us.

Amen.

“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10 🤎

Y’all have a blessed Sunday.

🚨 Attention, members! Deadline to apply for the Youth Beef Heifer Initiative is October 31.

Established in 2007, the Heifer Initiative Award has helped youth across Kentucky purchase a heifer to begin or grow their own herd. In 2011, KCA was honored to gain Farm Credit Mid America as a partner to ensure the continuation of this program and grow the interest of the cattle industry for the many students who apply. One winner is selected in each age division based on their applications and responses to questions asked pertaining to the beef industry. Each of the three winners receive up to $2,000 to purchase a heifer from a Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association member.

🐮 Mini Hereford Monday 🗓️

Polled doesn’t always mean homozygous polled.

A polled Miniature Hereford can carry two polled genes (PP) or one polled and one horned gene (Pp). Both animals look polled, but what they can pass on to their calves is different.

That’s where knowing your genetics matters. Pairing a homozygous polled (PP) animal with any mate means every calf will be polled. With heterozygous cattle, there’s still a chance for a horned calf depending on the mating.

It’s one of those little details that can make a big difference when you’re planning where you want your herd to go.

Good cattle start with good decisions.

Feel free to save our horn/poll genetics chart for easy reference. Happy Monday! Y’all have a great week!

Pasture & Prayer 🌾 🙏

Generational Legacy.

If you feel like it wasn’t left for you- it can start with you. It takes one person to be driven and committed.

Generational legacy isn’t measured in acres, head of cattle, or money in the bank.

It’s measured by what our children remember when we’re gone—the way we worked, the way we treated people, the way we loved our family, and whether they saw us turn to God in both the good years and the hard ones.

We’re not just raising cattle or tending land.
We’re showing the next generation how to live.

“One generation shall commend your works to another.” — Psalm 145:4

May the faith we live today still be seen in our family generations from now.

Y’all have a blessed Sunday!
