A fresh paddock is always a favorite around here! 🐑☀️

At Cherry Hill Solar Grazing, we use rotational grazing to help keep our sheep healthy while also improving the land they are grazing.

Our flock is moved between paddocks throughout the grazing season, allowing them to utilize fresh forage while giving the previously grazed areas time to rest and regrow. This helps promote better forage growth, healthier soils, and more efficient grazing.

Solar grazing is about more than just putting sheep under solar panels. It takes daily management, regular site checks, and paying attention to the needs of both the flock and the land.

We love being able to combine agriculture and renewable energy while giving our sheep a job to do. 🐑☀️

We’re excited to share that our sheep are officially grazing on HamilSun Community Solar! ☀️

I’m sure many of you have seen the number of solar sites increase across our state and country as we are eager to find ways to reduce pollution, fuel costs, and provide a more affordable source of electricity. The more desirable sites generally being in agricultural areas. But this doesn’t mean taking away from the farmer, it actually allows them to have an extra income.

Solar grazing is allowing farmers all over the country to increase and diversify their revenues without taking away the opportunity for them to farm. In the process of solar grazing, sheep will graze the solar farms and eat the vegetation to prevent panel shading. This reduces the need for mowing at solar sites, reducing emissions and costs.

I was fortunate enough to learn beside incredible researchers while at Cornell, such as Dr. Mike Thonney, who studied the benefits of solar grazing, such as maximizing forage production for sheep, increasing pollinator plant diversity for bees, and improving soil carbon sequestration. And I’m excited that our flock is now able to be apart of this. Our sheep are pretty happy too!
