Repost from .renewal and . Honored to be working on this project with such an awesome and passionate team. Stay tuned, we’re excited to see the results. Real citizen mycology at work!

“We at .renewal are hard at work making fungal-inoculated wattles, or what we’re calling “Mycowattles”.

These soon to be biochemically active barriers & filters are made by running substrate and inoculum though a wattle machine and filling biodegradable sock material.

We are experimenting with different low-tech substrate preparations, different types of biodegradable sock materials as well as working with different species of fungus and microorganisms.

We will be observing these wattles over the next month and tracking which set of variables does the best, which will be replicated and then used for toxin mitigation, stabilization of soil and supporting ecological regeneration post-fire.

It’s a mere bandaid on the deep wound of colonization, repression of fire & cultural burning, forestry mis-management, industrialization and a whole list of other factors, but the fungi instill a profound hope that we may rhizomatically merge back into harmonious relationship with our bioregions, the more than human communities we are enmeshed in and the deep story of these lands.”

Turkey tail 3-day update! Success in all three plates, sterile technique pays off. The addition of liquid culture during tissue transfer is something I just came up with and it seems to be a legit way to get more vigorous growth and take cultures from drier mushrooms.

Here’s the process of taking a culture from the wild turkey tail. I rip the mushroom open and with a flame sterilized scalpel, I take a piece of the mushroom from the center where it’s theoretically sterile except for mushroom mycelium in the form of the fruiting body. Put it on agar and cross my fingers. Using agar gives me the added benefit of being able to isolate good mycelium from contamination if it arrises. 🧫

It was tricky since turkey tails are so thin and woody, took me several tries to get a cross section thick enough for me to cut a wedge out without touching any of the outside of the mushroom 🦃

A customer specially requested local organic turkey tail (Trametes versicolor) so I set off into the forest to find a specimen. Turkey tail has been used by practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine for hundreds (thousands?) of years to increase immunity, energy and clear dampness.

Western science has found a multitude of polysaccharides and other compounds that confirm it’s health benefits, and more. Oncologists prescribe it for its cancer-fighting abilities and antioxidants.

One of the most medicinal mushrooms known today, and not a lot of farmers are growing it, at least here in the states. I’ll have to change that.

Second photo shows a secret meadow in Wilder where I found this culture on the edge of the forest.

What a blast, I’m hoping I can spend more time here in the future. A lifetime’s worth of bouldering problems and incredible flora and fauna that have wild adaptations to survive here.

For Fungus February, I will be the monthly speaker for the general meeting! I’ll be sharing my family’s history with mushroom cultivation and how you can get started growing your own mushrooms. I will talk about various techniques in the industry and a rundown of the cultivation process from culture to fruit! Come join this Wednesday 2/16 at

Fairy fingers in the wild! Clavaria fragilis. Obviously they’re fragile and unsubstantial, but they’re supposed to be edible. It’s a saprotroph so theoretically you can cultivate it. Who wants to be the first?

If you left your culture slant alone for 30 years, this might be what it’ll look like. Dried agar with unidentified white fuzz growing on it. These were dug up from my parent’s stash, probably older than I am. The polyfill and foil technique is still used by some mycologists for pressure sterilizing certain containers. And of course the cut and reused juice bottle as a test tube holder - a staple in many Chinese households ;)
