Tamara Lepori’s colony swarmed on January 31st and then at least one more time. She gave me the after swarm for my observation hive as it is very small. Since it was an after swarm the queen would be a virgin so we hope she finds some drones later this week. Interesting behavior of the other bees is their treating her like a mated queen surrounding her and grooming her. In a couple of weeks I plan to add more bees to this very small colony. I will spray both groups of bees with mint sugar water so they will happily combine with no problem. I have not opened my hives yet because I don’t want to break the propolis seal. I really want to see if there are drones in them. I have not seen any flying around. With all the bee colonies around here I am optimistic that there are drones out there!

Late this afternoon I got a call to get another swarm! I have been mentoring a brand new beekeeper who bought new equipment from John McGinnis so invited him to come along. We got this nice swarm and tomorrow we will put it in his new hive! I taught him and his young friend we also took along the Fischer’s BeeQuick trick of painting it on the branches to keep the bees from returning to them. I had my mentee take the photo of me with the BeeQuick and my feather I use to paint it on. Hope this is a good photo for you, James Fischer!

Tomatoes are finally getting ripe! I have about 5 jars of honey left, lots of summer squash and eggs!

02/06/2020

I do happen to have about a dozen 1-pound jars of freshly harvested honey right now (Feb. 5th).

We now have summer honey for sale in the barn. Some of it is from my 4-H beekeeper Luc's bees. I am selling it for him and giving him 100% of the money.

Last 18 jars of honey were bottled today and are out in the barn with lots of tomatoes and eggs. The tomatoes are a variety of colors and sizes. I have priced them at a dollar a basket to keep life easy for all of us. Stop by any time. We have the help yourself honor system so you don't have to look for me. I have been busy picking tomatoes!

I was able to put out some baskets of tomatoes ($1 each). So far they are the smaller and medium size ones. I have about a dozen one-pound jars of fresh honey for sale right now. The chickens are laying really well now too! Oh, I also have zucchini and yellow squash in the refrigerator with the eggs. Still waiting for those big tomatoes to get ripe. Talk to me about peaches too. We have been picking them and they are yummy! I have had them twice or three times a day! Love this time of year!

I am starting to find a ripe tomato here and there so hopefully that means in a week or so we should have many more. I have yellow squash and zucchini in the refrigerator for 50 cents each. The chickens have matured so now we are getting more eggs. I still have some jars of honey, too.

I just bottled 24 one-pound jars of wonderful mixed flower honey. It for sale in the barn along with the eggs and squash I have been harvesting. So far the 90 tomato plants do not have ripe tomatoes but I look carefully every day. I am looking forward to all the different varieties I planted. There will be red, dark almost black, yellow and orange ones this year! Oh, I also have lots of cabbages out there ready to harvest so let me know if you want one. I will cut it off when you come so it is nice and fresh. 707-479-1613 is the cell phone # to reach me.

The honey sold so quickly that I have just one jar left!

05/29/2018

Today I am bottling the second small batch of spring honey. It will be in one pound jars for $10 each in the barn as usual.
