We are absolutely thrilled to Announce the purchase of our new herd sire. Supreme Grand Champion Ram at the All Canada Classic Sheep Show Elm Shade Suffolks Rip.

I’m not sure we have the words of gratitude, we feel towards the Mastine family. for all the decades of hard work and dedication they’ve put into breeding Suffolks with purpose, and extraordinary breed character.

Their commitment to their goals deserves every bit of notoriety they’ve received; topping the event off earning their title of Supreme Flock at the classic! Congratulations you all!

We are simply biting at the bit, to put Rip to work here. And cannot thank the Mastine family enough!

We’d also like to express our continued gratitude to our Suffolk mentor and consultant Joe at Emenheiser Sheep. The flock that continues to thrive, perform, and impress in all the traits we value is made of his genetic engineering, and keen eye to detail.

He also works closely with Elm shade and has followed this impressive Ram since birth. putting in the countless hours getting to know their flock with the same passion and interest they have for each Suffolk family line in their barn.

We couldn’t have done this without him! So thank you Joe. We feel blessed to be able to work so closely with you.
(The cherry on top was getting to watch you bringing back all your showmanship skills with Rip, side by side with your Canadian family 😆 No rust to speak of! 🙌)

We can’t wait to share the progress and influence this ram will surely have on his offspring. Combined with the influence Phoenix X Tailback have had. Building a ewe flock of which has catapulted (what was a foundation 6 years ago) light years ahead of anything we could have anticipated.

Our feelings of gratitude and excitement can not be emphasized enough. THANK YOU all for making this possible.

Cheers to budding friendships. And shared goals. Honoring the Suffolk breeds traditional and unparalleled value in the industry. worthy of noticing, celebrating, and utilizing to its full potential.

“people say sheep are stupid, but in order to handle sheep well, you have to be smarter than they are. And not very many people are.”

“He said to work with sheep, you have to be patient, gentle, and kind.”
And I think that that's also so true of the herders. But I just think sheep are, they're special little animals.
And it takes a certain kind of person, I think, to work with them well.”
“The sheep have this relationship with the herders” they move and can be managed to graze with great precision.”

I’m a big fan of this podcast their content and the hosts that work to supply it Ryan Mahoney, Dr. Rosie Busch, and Dan Macon. Their enthusiasm and passion in the important work of the sheep industry is evident in everything they bring to the conversation.

This episode had me thinking on a few topics I’d like to bring to the table, in a future post. relevant to raising sheep and working as a shepherd in the north east.

But for now I’ll leave it here with the quotes above. Because it deserves to be said. the relationship between sheep and shepherd is one unparalleled to that of other livestock (from my experience). And I feel incredibly blessed to share this life with a flock of very special Suffolks and commercials that teach new lessons regularly, if your listening. On the land, on life and working with another species and how truly small as humans are we are in this world.

In addition to raising plain of nutrition during these last weeks of gestation we’ve also been getting our “steps in”. Which is both beneficial for reducing risk of dystocia and ensuring space is made in their rumen to properly feed ewes and baby’s as to avoid Preg tox. Or catching it early if anyone is showing symptoms of being out of balance.

Bonus: dogs get to work with the interesting challenge of navigating mountains of snow banks & drifts.
