Carolina has taken the title most would say; Lexington is named the BBQ capital of the world. There are no records of Chief Powhatan or Pocahontas’s meals, but I remember reading one of my father’s dusty books on Virginia… the natives would steal the settlers pigs. The settlers would take them to court and the natives would have to pay them back in polished wampum shells. Now you reckon… the nativ

es didn’t know how to cook that rascal? In 1769 George Washington said in his diary that he stayed at a BBQ all night, drank great wine, played four hands of cards and had a great time. That’s about 20 years before North Carolina was even established. The war between the states decimated Richmond… and all of its BBQ pits. In fact just recently they unearthed a pit behind James Madison’s house within eye sight of Monticello.
