🟥 Red King vs ⬜ Ivory King — what’s the difference?

It comes down to genetics + diet.
King salmon eat shrimp, krill, and crab rich in natural pigments called carotenoids.

Red Kings store those pigments, giving them their deep color.
Ivory Kings don’t have the ability to store those pigments—so the flesh stays white.

Same species. No dye.
Just nature doing its thing ✨

Dockside took silver for Best Fresh Meat/Seafood! I’m honored to have been with this market from the start-to have helped shape the direction of the market’s growth and am proud to be celebrating our 5th anniversary. ❤️

Wow! We won Silver for Best Fresh Meat/Seafood in Bellingham Alive's Best of the Northwest, Readers Choice Award. Thank you to everyone who voted for us!

A huge thanks to all of our hardworking fishermen for the risks they take to feed our community. Commercial fishing is difficult, dangerous work.

We also thank our talented artists and food vendors who bring beauty and flavor to our market, helping make Dockside a vibrant and well-rounded event!

We look forward to celebrating 5 years of Dockside at our next market on October 18th!🎉

I’ve been working to push for change in how Alaska Air Cargo handles perishable products, and I need your support. There is significant backing now to help drive this effort forward, but we need more names to show this is a widespread issue affecting many — not just one business.

Please take a few minutes to fill out this form and add your voice. Together we can reduce waste, protect our catch, and keep our small businesses thriving.

Thank you,
Chelsea

Last week, Alaska Air Cargo mishandled a shipment of beautiful, fresh-caught wild salmon — fish my own mother caught in Alaska — by failing to keep it properly stored and routing it to the wrong city. By the time this was sorted out, the cold chain was broken, it was in their custody for 4 days and the fish was no longer safe for human consumption.

This was my very first batch of fresh salmon for my farmers markets this season. It was heavily promoted, and customers were lined up ready to buy. Instead, I had to tell them the fish they were expecting never arrived — and now thousands of dollars worth of wild salmon will be dumped in a landfill.

When I called Alaska Air Cargo, I begged to have the spoiled fish released so I could at least donate it as crab bait or donate it for non-human consumption, rather than see it wasted. They refused — unless I paid for it in full.

This is shameful and unacceptable. Alaska’s wild resources deserve better stewardship than this. The fishermen who harvest them and the small businesses who rely on your cargo services deserve better too.

One of my core values is doing everything possible to honor the fish we harvest and keep waste to an absolute minimum. Watching nutritious, wild food get dumped in a landfill — because of careless handling AND rigid policy — is heartbreaking and morally wrong.

I am calling on Alaska Air Cargo to immediately review and change its policy to allow spoiled or mishandled perishable shipments to be released for safe, alternative uses — such as animal feed, bait, or compost — without forcing the shipper to pay for product that is no longer fit for its original purpose.

This is common sense. It is respectful. And it is the right thing to do for our fisheries, our environment, and our communities.

Please share this and help hold Alaska Air Cargo accountable to do better. This cannot be how we treat our food, our fishermen, or our planet.
