I hear it all the time from people looking for ducks: “anything BUT Muscovy…”

Well, guess what you WON’T get when you get anything but Muscovy, you “anything BUT Muscovy” crowd?

-you WON’T get quiet birds that barely make a sound.

-you WON’T get the friendliest feather puppies you’ve ever had wag their tails for you.
🤔
-you WON’T get the calmest ducklings ever to sit in a brooder.
🤔
-you WON’T get a mama that will hatch and raise anything you put under her.
🤔
-you WON’T get XL eggs that can feed a family but can’t fit into an egg carton without leaving the lid open.
🤔
-you WON’T get a rich RED meat that reaches market weight at 3 months of age and rivals any fancy restaurant steak but can be eaten by those with alpha-gal syndrome.
🤔
-you WON’T get a hardy bird that will forage for Its food while saving your wallet and ridding your property of mice and pests.
🤔
-you WON’T get a beautiful bird that comes in more colors and patterns than any other breed or species.
🤔
-you WON’T get the single most cost-effective, self-sufficient, smartest, and most valuable animal that any homestead could ever raise.

Those are all the things you WON’T be getting when you don’t get Muscovy, but don’t worry…
…we WILL be getting all of those things and MORE, because our homestead will never be without them! ❤️

Today I turned down a repeat customer who wanted one of our Pekins processed. That wasn’t easy. I cried harder than I expected, and my husband finally said, “It’s not worth $30 to be this upset. Just keep the duck.” And he was right.

I usually have no problem processing ducks — that’s part of farming and I respect that side of it. But these were my original Pekins, my first flock, and that hits different. I was only even considering it because we have too many boys right now and I was trying to be practical.

Sometimes farming looks like grit and get-it-done energy. Today it looked like choosing compassion over cash and letting my heart stay soft. We’ll handle the logistics like we always do. But I won’t apologize for caring this much.

Today, the duck stayed. And so did my peace. 🐥💛

It’s cull day for at least a few of our ducks today! Recently we had a customer ask for blood, specifically for duck blood soup. That was a first. We will have to try a recipe 🤪

Our homestead officially has too many BOYS. If you know anybody that wants meat birds, or Muscovy in general, send them our way. We have beautiful green, pied, and barred drakes. They have started to go after our hatchlings and have been successful in their efforts quite a few times this week, so it’s either they sell or it’s time for freezer camp! $35/bird or $45/butchered. Left wings are clipped so they can free range during the day. (Leave our Pekins and Swedish Ducks alone they aren’t up for grabs lol) Located in Ottawa Lake.

The goats got out into the horse pasture next door, and by golly the neighbor and Mrs. Hodges were both surprised and impressed when she opened the back door and called for them, and they SPRINTED back home. They love their mama ❤️
